Background:
Borrowed an Audioquest Dragonfly Red - Updated it to latest configuration (supposed to be MQA compatible now)
Went to 2L-Audio site to download some MQA test material.
The 2L Audio site states clearly that Macs can't play MQA-encoded FLAC files natively. The state says that the FLAC files must be converted to ALAC, and in a way that preserves the MQA encoding. They recommend a "XDA converter" for this purpose.
I downloaded the converter & converted the 2L files MQA-FLAC to MQA-ALAC per the site's recommendations.
2L Audio then recommend an "MQA-friendly" players (their recommendation is Audirvana).
So I downloaded the recommended player - and STILL can't get the files to play with MQA. The 2L site also mentioned that one might have to change the file names to append the ".mqa" extension. As converted, my files look like: filename.mqa.flac.
When double clicked, the flac file automatically opens in jRiver and then plays at its native resolution without MQA.
I've tried renaming the files to "filename.flac.mqa" and then I can get the files to open in Audirvana, and although the player recognizes them as being MQA files, the Dragonfly still shows the files as playing in their native resolution and without MQA.
Yes, I could stream from Tidal through Audirvana, but I want to first understand why the files I've already downloaded won't work in MQA with my Dragonfly.
Ideas?
