Your design, Rory? If so, congrats! It's a most excellent piece of work!

Well, this is very good news, but...how does MRS. BUTTERWORTH feel about them?

Nice review! His main ding against it was he thought "I got the impression that the Emotiva was adding extra kick to the deepest notes." If this was so, wouldn't that show up on his frequency measurements? Or am I missing something? Jeff

So is it better having a subwoofer handling the midbass? What is the midbass frequency?

Nice summation "For $399, the Emotiva BasX S12 is a great buy. I don’t know of a sub its size with more output, and in the deepest bass it has a bit more oomph than its closest competitors. I think anyone shopping for a subwoofer at or near this price would be very happy with the BasX S12 -- especially if they like a little extra kick in the bottom end."

Nice review! His main ding against it was he thought "I got the impression that the Emotiva was adding extra kick to the deepest notes." If this was so, wouldn't that show up on his frequency measurements? Or am I missing something? Jeff What is fast becoming the conventional wisdom when it comes to audio reviews is to take the subjective impressions with a grain of salt. What isn't said as often as it needs to be is that measurements often need to be taken with a similar grain of salt; what an audio reviewer measures in his room or in a free space/ground plane environment, even if done correctly, will not necessarily (and typically, most assuredly won't) translate directly to your in-room experience. We publish a frequency response plot for our BasX subwoofers that is measured in an outdoor, ground plane environment to simulate an anechoic environment, but the truth is that room acoustic effects are at their most severe in the deep bass, where you can expect around 10-12 dB of room pressurization gain in the bottom octave, depending upon room volume and dimensions. This can be mitigated somewhat with placement, but it also means that corrective equalization is just as necessary as it ever has been for achieving the flattest and most predictable in-room bass response. Brent's review work is just about the best available in the subjective and measured domains, particularly for subwoofers, and I greatly respect his opinions as a reviewer, but I noticed that Brent did not publish the measured response of the S12 subwoofer as placed in his room, so it is not possible to see whether his room is reinforcing some part of the BasX S12's response that could lead to the above observation about extra "kick". Overall, I regarded his review as quite positive for a subwoofer in this price and size class.

When I heard the basx 12 there was a bit of extra kick in the bass compared to the power sound subs which were much larger and went just a tad deeper in the extremely low bass. Which I liked. Extremely good for movies. I assume it was the port producing that bit of powah. Nothing wrong with it. I don't think it needs "fixing". The 12 inch sub is impressive especially for the price. I'm probably going to get two 10's or 8's.

The 10 has a smidgen more output and is more 'tight' sounding, so it would be my choice for music, but the 8 is just a fun little sub, and it has surprising bass reach. It sounds more like a S12 with more limited output, rather than sounding like a smaller S10.
