As others have indicated, forgo piano gloss to obtain a better price / performance ratio. Your best bang for the dollar... you can't beat DIY. You can find unbiased data here and yes, most graphs will surprise you: data-bass.com/home. To my ears, a sealed sub is more musical, a pair is more dynamic as they have more cone area to properly energize the room and they provide an overall more balanced sound. I replaced my HSU VTF-15h with a DIY sealed UM18 powered by a Crown 2502... shortly afterwards, I build a second sub and added another Crown. During initial subwoofer listening tests I was using my B&W 804 speakers.

Do it yourself can yield some pretty impressive results, but very few if any can match the performance of a top of the line factory engineered subwoofer like Velodyne or any number of other top subs. As far as gloss piano finish goes, NOBODY! is taking mine away....I love the look like the Steinway I grew up with at home. Many factors are involved in low distortion bass from a sealed enclosure (some things in my opinion are better left to the professionals....my two cents.) Bill

Hmm... not going to argue, but sealed is sealed, as long as the driver parameters are taken into account and it's placed into a properly sized and braced enclosure, no magic is needed. Most tweaking is done on the amp side with DSP, house curves, etc.
I loved my HSU until I built my first DIY sub and sat down and listened... and listened... and listened. Prior to my HSU, I had Def Tech, Velodyne, etc. etc. Again, just my preference, my opinion, and experience. If I didn't go the DIY route, my next choice was going to be a pair of SVS subs. I tried their Ultra towers in my room, but felt my B&Ws were better.

Digitally controlled servo,...just one example that can’t be matched in a DIY sealed.

Impressive......I had not seen their DIY site. I does show actually, how much goes into getting it "right" if you're one to get it done on your own. (Especially the servo matching/application.) Have you built one of these? Bill

Servo controlled subs are a bit of a marketing play. A properly designed box and a properly designed amplifier (High damping factor) will yield just as good of results. What most people don't realize is that almost all of what we perceive below about 80hz is directly attributed to room dimensions, sub location and listening location. This includes impulse response, phase alignment and frequency response. I would argue that someone who spends the time to DIY a sub, will pay more attention to the more important factors of how it sounds (such as those I already listed) than someone who doesn't DIY, but I admit that's my anecdotal experience

I will keep my Velodyne with its digitally controlled servo, definitely well controlled and with an excellent tone range beyond most subs, it has brought the most authentic and realistic drums to my system, it is a very quick and detailed sub and digs very low as well, paired with my RT-10d sub they are an excellent match that complement each other very well. Musically the Velodyne excels in drums while the RT-10d shines more in a different way, bringing out the best of a bass guitar or cello and together they make a very musical pairing.
