Hi,
I was having not trouble with connecting my Bluesound Node (Gen 1) to my XDA-2 (Gen 1) via Toslink until I moved. Now when I try to connect the Node to the XDA-2 via optical, I get no handshake (no light no readout on the little XDA-2 screen). I figured it was the optical cable gone bad since that's a common problem with optical, but a newly purchased cable is also not working. I've tried both Optical ports on the XDA-2 and neither is working. The Node itself seems to be fine since the internal DAC is outputting a working signal via the RCA connectors. It's just that I prefer to use the XDA-2 DAC and am wondering now whether I've got a malfunctioning XDA-2. Any suggestions?

The fact that the analog outputs on the Bluesound Node are working does NOT mean that the digital optical output is working. Because both optical inputs on the XDA-2 go through the same circuitry, the problem could be with the XDA-2; however, the problem could also be with the Node.... Optical digital signals go one way.... so you should see red light shining out the end of the cable when you unplug it..... if not, then it is the Node that isn't sending anything. Thanks for the quick reply. I forgot to mention that I do, indeed, see the red light coming out of the end of the cable when it's connected to the Node. Am I officially SOL? I assume it's not worth trying to repair the XDA-2, but suggestions welcome...

Not seeing the red light would be bad.... but it's only a sort of "carrier" so the problem could still be at that end. I assume you checked to make sure it's not just something that got turned off (and remember that the XDA-2 handles stereo but not surround if that output somehow got set to "bitstream".) (I would also blow into the optical output connector - I've seen cases where a piece of lint got caught in there and partially blocked the beam.) To be honest, if the XDA-2 is out of warranty, then it may well not be worth fixing. However, it did come with a five year warranty, so you should make sure. Alternately, you could use some sort of optical to S/PDIF converter. (It would add another little box and more wires, but they're pretty cheap, and shouldn't adversely affect the sound.) Again thanks for the quick response. I just tried blowing out the ports. Alas, this didn't solve the problem. The Node has very few configurable options, and I'm not seeing anything amiss with them. It there's a problem on the Node side, would you expect to see nothing at all (i.e., no Opt1 or Opt2 input indicator lights) on the XDA-2 side? All of the other input lights come on when I press the corresponding input buttons on the front of the XDA-2 and that happens even though there is nothing connected to those inputs. That's why I suspected the problem was at the XDA-2 side since the Opt1 and Opt2 inputs seem to be completely dead/unresponsive when I push the buttons.
The 5 year warranty gives me hope though since I believe I bought the XDA-2 in late 2012 or early 2013. Is there a support phone number or email to use to check on whether I'm still covered by warranty?
Cheers, Knick
