Like so many, I've read and thought about Dolby Atmos and DTS X. For myself, there will be neither in my home for the foreseeable future, if ever.
That being said I believe at least one, if not both are here to stay, with the most powerful marketing campaign I've ever seen for ANY audio format.
So, between headphones 🎧, and sound bars, plus limited HT systems ( meaning with dedicated overhead, properly configured speakers,) it will end up being MORE than simply a niche market share. However not at all, a mass move. In that mix will be those who turn that new receiver on, and as long as the display reads ATMOS.....they've got it, even if all the speakers are lined up in a row, on the floor.
I know I'm backing up, into the thread title, but I was simply thinking about a time, when we would install speakers in the ceiling for one reason alone....to put the music 🎶 in any room to save space, and to hell with how good or bad it sounded.
God Bless the Grateful Dead playing over the pool table.

Some feel as strongly about a good home theatre experience as 2 channel purists do about their music. Atmos WHEN DONE PROPERLY adds another dimension to the "bubble"and helps to transport the viewer/listener into the film. Is this something every ht enthusiast will employ, absolutely not but I don't have a dedicated 2channel space either. 😉😉😉 I get so into my movies sometimes the hair on my neck and arms stands up. Most likely similar to the way audiophiles feel when the hear that flutist in the third row fart for the first time.
Anyway. Cheers and happy listening.

Everything old is new again; my dad installed a pair of ceiling speakers in the living room in the mid 60s. I remember we would sit on the couch with one speaker above on the right and one on the left (even then I knew where the sweet spot was).
I'll be looking for something to match my JBLs, and, at least as importantly, a 4 channel amp.

at least as importantly, a 4 channel amp. Yep, great point. I'm still debating on the Emotiva A-500 or doing a bit of future proofing with an A-700. Either way I'll have at least one left over channel. Going with the A-700 would allow me to drive my 4 rears (I'm using 4 speakers for the back 2 channels) separately, not in 2 parallel sets off the same 2 XPA-5 amp channels. For the extra $200 I'm leaning towards the A-700.

My enthusiasm for movies and music is equal and I loose my mind for both. In order to do object based audio in my space, I would have to turn everything around and use the narrower wall for the mains. Since that can't happen in this house, I prefer to stick with my current configuration. I do get exceptional overhead effects even now with the rear surround tweeters around 4 feet above ear level. Skull 💀 island's lossless mix was astonishing (I need to hear it again!) I'm 5.1 however not all are created equal. The system, including the subwoofer has a total of 29 drivers. Bill

Have you considered something like the Klipsch RP-140SA Elevation Speakers? With these you could place them on top of your Left/Right front speakers and have them bounce audio off the ceiling. Not ideal, but better than nothing and "only" $500/pair ... Casey

When we moved into our home about three years ago Atmos was just coming out. I went ahead and installed the in ceiling speakers and set everything up for a 7.2.4 setup. I am very happy I did. I find my self buying Blu-Rays now that have Atmos just to hear the sound. Heck I have bought a few very questionable movies (I looking at you Transformers Age of Extinction) just to get Atmos in the media room. When done right the experience is just so much more that a 7.2 DD+ configuration. Now with 4k HDR finally becoming reasonable in cost for a projector my next media room upgrade is coming. My big issue now is my Marantz receiver does not support HDR so I will have to replace that as well.

Should the ceiling speakers be more uni-directional or di/bipole? At the Emofest, they mounted 4 speakers in one cluster pod which represented one atmos channel.

Not ideal, but better than nothing and "only" $500/pair ... Casey When Dolby Labs realized they had a marketing issue looming, with getting an average user to install overhead speakers, they were quick to add the reflective sound alternative, which included modified crossovers, to compensate. The other issue not well thought out was using the bounce method when you have a vaulted ceiling, which can greatly diminish the effect. Bill

Yeah, definitely a problem for me: I rent an apartment that I've lived in for almost 24 years. <My landlord loves me but excavating the ceiling walls to put in speakers and run wires is not part of that love. Since I have a flat 8' high ceiling, something like the Klipsch Elevation Speakers might be an option. That would give me a 5.1.~2~ system ... is there such a thing? :-)
