Surely I must have missed this at the time ..............................................The new ELP Laser Turntable plays records without touching them… The catch: a $15,000 price tag. elpj.com/Cheers Gary

Reminds me of the first CD players that came to market. Some of them were stupid expensive. If this catches on the price will drop. It'll also give LP-philes something to chew on in endless posts on internet forums. I can hear it already - "It's not analog" - among other things.

Rather interesting. So this is not digital in any way? Sound stays in the analog domain all the way?

The industrial design reminds me of this Pioneer Laserdisc player that I think is still gorgeous today.

this technology has been around for a long time. It has just been cost prohibitive in the past and there was some problems staying in the groove (no pun intended )

Ok I will be the first...Just because it plays a record doesn't make it analog...The only thing appealing about this player IMO is that nothing touches the disc (and it looks cool) If you want a player like this just get a good cd player. I would love to hear this player though.

Didn't someone come up with a way to just take a close photo of an album and process from that?

I think there was a later attempt as well. The problem, as I recall, was dealing with dust. The error sound from a dust spec was annoying and very, well, digital.

People will try different lasers or laser "filters" to lift a veil or expand the soundstage...

OK, this is a silly question if I ever heard one. Do you use a turntable? Yes? Then you will ALWAYS need a new one. Just like any other piece of equipment for those of us involved with this hobby. The answer is always "yes."

The answer is always "yes." It's similar to the N+1 formula I use with bikes and guitars. How many bikes/guitars do I really need? N+1, where N=the current number of bikes/guitars I currently own.

The OP is killing time waiting for all the hurricanes to blow over Perhaps, if so my prayers are with all in its path! But perhaps the OP is killing time waiting on the RMC-1? Perhaps! 😋

The OP is Down Under, so unless it's a typhoon it's one HECK of a hurricane.

But, then, you could pay that much for a decent cartridge these days.... or a pair of speaker cables.... so what's the big deal (Yes, I'm kidding... It really does seem to me that such a device COULD eliminate MOST of the drawbacks of vinyl... while delivering MOST of the benefits.) I have the somewhat dubious distinction of having SOUNDSMITH.....but 12 minutes from my place. Vinyl nuts spend all kinds of money 💰 for his cartridges. 10 grand for a cartridge there is a drop in the bucket, and they've got a lineup, looking like something out of Tiffanys Jewelry. Yet,when you walk in the place, it LOOKS like the typical audio repair shop many of us remember growing up, with gear stacked up all over the place. Bill
