The only down side of the Opposite UDP-203 is that it can't output music data over USB. I'm planning on buying the RMC-1 when it comes out and I want to use its DACs, not those on the Oppo.
So I'm stuck needing a solution of either 1Gb/s Ethernet-to-USB or directly feeding Ethernet into the RMC-1. And, as we've discovered, the Raspberry Pi3 + RoPieee is good enough at ~$100 total cost (RPi3, Case, SD Card, Power Supply). And while I'd be willing to pay probably $300 more for an integrated RMC-1 solution, I probably wouldn't be willing to pay $1,000. So it's hard to see how Emotiva could create a Streaming Media Solution within those price constraints. (sigh)
I guess I'll have to look at that at some point. But for now Roon Server -> 1Gb/s Ethernet -> Sqeezebox Touch -> Optical S/PIDF -> DMC-1 works well enough.

Why not use the hdmi out of the oppo for music?

That is really demonstrating what you can do with your Roon Gui interface, which you download onto your device (pc, mac, ios or android phone or tablet) from this page:
I wonder whether that is the "server" you're referring to? The ambiguity is that what is typically called the Roon server usually contains the "Core" and a "player" (output), and optionally, a remote (when it is downloaded onto your mac or Pc, but of course not unto a NAS). Other relevant explanations are given on the page, but you can have the entire server with all these options on your computer in minutes, although it is better to have the "core" part downloaded onto a remote and dedicated computer or similar compatible unit that you do not frequently use for day to day operations, or a NAS. The server interface you play with on a daily basis can be located on your daily-use computer, tablet, and/or phone, and can have a player and a remote, or both, on the same device, depending on what it is...

Ahhh, most of your quote you were referencing the rmc-1 , thought that was where you were headed?
Yes, that's definitely where I will be headed, but it'll be a while before the RMC-1 is available, and I'll probably take a few months to pull the trigger. So I need to live with what I've got now.

Wow. They really built a custom application instead of just doing a web-based User Interface? Amazing.
But, you were right and it works. So I've got that installed on my MacBook Pro. Thanks for the pointer. I never would have guessed that they would have gone with a hand-crafted application.

I like Roon for a lot of reasons but one of my favorite aspects is their commitment to quality software. Every application, desktop or mobile, has bugs but Roon releases very frequently and tends to get ahead of the issues. There was a rather big bug a few months ago and Roon released a fix within 24 hours and was very transparent about the problem in their forum (which is well designed as well).

If I like how it works, a better MQA capable DAC in the future -- would have bought an Emotiva one immediately had they have this capability. I have more computers than I have audio gear, so endpoints anywhere will be easy.

Please let me know your thoughts as you investigate this route.

This is how I'm currently using Roon (TIDAL, or other streaming services, are optional).
The Apple TV "Endpoint" is controlled via the Roon Remote app installed on phone or tablet; each remote can control any "Zone" as Roon calls them which, to me is essentially the DACs or AVRs.
One of the best things about Roon is it’s custom control app. Tons of flexibility, and a cess to data about the tracks or the artist is amazing. Plus I can control any of the three endpoints in my house with any control app from my iPad, phone, or PC. I can start a track or playlist or album using my iPad then change it up with my phone from another room. The server is file format and sample rate independent ( it plays any music format) and consolidates files from multiple locations on the network. And it sounds great.

So Roon is pretty darn slick. The way it merges Tidal with my existing music on my Drobo NAS is very nice, and its GUI and "encyclopedia of music info" is what any of the big boys' streaming/purchasing services should be.
The high level of configurability with audio equipment, focused on the best data stream is very nice. As for audio quality, I have been away from home so all I have is my Mac laptop, the Meridian Explorer2 DAC, and my cans. That being said, it is still a marvelous setup for traveling and staying in a billeting room.
Now, when I get back home this week and hook up this setup into my AVR, plus all my new speakers (T2,C2,E2s), and my XPA 3.2 that are at home waiting for me, I will really put it to the test.
The one thing that strikes me, though is that neither Tidal, nor a MQA capable DAC are really all that needed. Tidal is good as a service for exploring new music, but I wish it had Spotify integration as well. The MQA tracks are interesting and sound a bit different in Headphones, all things being equal, but will have to see what its like on my two home setups. I wonder if a higher end DAC might be better; I m not going to get the fugly Mytek thing...
Finally, my setup isn't what Roon recommends and won't be for some time. If I understand it correctly, they expect a separate machine as a server, and then endpoints connected to the AVR/pre-processor/Amp. This almost necessitates wired ethernet as well. I am not in a position to do this, and it is way easier to stick a MAC in my cabinet that can, in addition to Roon, run NAS with all my movies as well, along with the ability to living room internet search, etc.

The Roon folks don't dictate or even suggest any configuration. Their architecture describe things called Servers, Endpoints, and Controllers. These could all be on a single machine if desired. Or they could all be on separate machines, or any combination.
In my case, they're all separate. I have an 8TB Server upstairs, a Squeezebox Touch Endpoint downstairs connected to my DMC-1 via Optical S/PIDF, and Controllers running on my iPhone and MacBook Pro.
