I really have no interest in Atmos 11 channel systems or could care less about the latest RMC 1- $5000 upgrade-able processor.
I listen to 2.2 audio 99% of the time and rarely watch BluRays. I see most new movies when they come out.
I gave the surround thing a chance with several versions of 5.1,-- 5.2 now 7.2 systems. It's not that they are bad-it's just I am a two channel guy
Guess I will always be.
Comments?? Thinking about selling HT related equipment

I did the same. I watch movies now with 2.1 audio.

Sounds like a great epiphanic moment. If you have determined with such clarity that HT is not for you, then ditch all the extra "boxes" you do not need, and free up the space... I am sure your wallet and your interior decorator will both thank you for the new leaner, "meaner," badass look, and you will only have your two-channel nirvana to tinker with and improve, if you like.... I see only upsides in this scenario...

I've never really understood the 5.1, 7.2, etc stuff. If I'm watching something it is always in front of me. Now I understand if an explosion goes off behind me that's where the sound is..........But, most movies I have watched don't have bombs going off, UNLESS THEY ARE SHOWING YOU THEM...........hence, in front of you. A properly set up 2 channel system will give a great wall of sound that is almost 180 degrees. At least for me..........that's good enough. Besides, the added cost of more speakers, cables, etc, instead of higher quality 2 channel gear is worth it.

Music is far more interesting to me than car explosions......

I agree. You should sell me all your stuff at a massive discount just to get it gone as soon as possible and out of your sight. Disclosure: I am a 7.2 guy and have no plans on "upgrading" to anything else.

I like surround mainly for BD concert discs and other surround audio which can be very good and quite entertaining. For movies I prefer it over 2.1 but could live without it.

i would be curious as the age of the posters saying "surround sound isnt for me"
I know they dont immediatly correlate as my dad who is 70 is who got me into surround sound (and he is ALL about great sounding..immersive..theaters/presentations of movies)..the day it was releases to movies with return of the jedi....but it seems more like the over 50 crowd are those that dont like/need the shiny new fangled surround sound....I could be wrong

You guys sound like a bunch of old fuddy duddies! Actually, I'm probably older than 75% of you.
I really like surround sound for bluray movies. Works great. Sounds great.
I like music in 2 channel stereo mode. I've never liked surround music except for BD concert discs.

Maybe you can coordinate a compromise if you want a best of both worlds scenario. My 2 channel room is 5.2 capable via small Paradigm cubes on the rear wall and the center blends seamlessly into my rack. Win for me because the wife is happy the kids can watch their movies without having to touch all the equipment in the theater. Most of the time we have music on while we're cooking dinner. Scott

I'm 75 and I like it all! 2 channel music on high powered amplifiers matched to hard to drive speakers, low powered SET amps matched to high efficency speakers, 7.2.4 with either 65" viewing or 120" viewing options, and multi channel music from blurays. I like direct from CD sound, streamed sound (including Tidal with MQA) and netword stored and streamed sound. I like Alexa and Harmony to verbally control my HT and lighting and keep me informed on weather and current events while I blog. I have audio headsets and VR headsets and stream Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Directv with Sunday Ticket. My house is a playground!

also follow up question...
2 channel purists can sound very hypocritical....
"its a trap" "who needs 11 channels" "its overkill and a money grab" etc etc etc
yet for 2 channel...they (just generalizing for the argument...i understand this is an unfair blanket statement) will think of anything to improve the sound to make it sound more "realistic"...i/e/ expensive DACs (its all just 1's and 0's) expensive CD players....MONOBLOCKS...expensive cables...etc...
sounds like 2 channel can be as big and expensive a rabbit hole as HT....just different content.
and audiobill...who said surround sound movies is for explosions...some of THE BEST surround usage is used in dramas..
again no offense meant to everyone...just trying to get the conversation flowing that HT and 2 channel are more alike than different IMHO

I am down to stereo due to some equipment glitches, and I miss the surround for video. Especially for sports and movies.

I'm a little divided. If most of your listening is 2 channel, I don't think there is much point in surround sound. Now I have heard well implemented surround sound and it can be very immersive. The movie Gravity comes to mind. What a knockout!
But my problems are: I want the best quality out of whatever setup I have. And I've spent a good bit on my two channel setup. I can't see myself doing that for a surround sound setup - just yet. Other than buying amps, speakers, new electric lines as I'm maxed out on my current ones, and a new processor I have two niggling problems.
1. I don't want to keep upgrading my processor. This makes it disposable. I don't want to spend a lot of money on something that is disposable. Or buy something that is disposable.
2. Setup integration. - Knowing how picky I am I am not going to be wanting to route my stereo stuff through a processor no matter how pristine they claim the audio stage is. If I were to get a preamp with HT bypass - I haven't found one yet that screams to me ed game quality as a preamp. It cuts down on my choice of preamp as well. (I plan to buy the Audio GD HE-1).
- I'll need a new electric line which is $$. and - I'll have to figure out mounting options and placement options. I have enough of a headache carefully placing my current units. If I go Atmos which I will likely want to, placing it on my sloped ceiling sounds like a real headache.

I enjoy both. In most rooms I have a HT set up and a separate two channel rig. For anything music I prefer two channel but for anything on the tv I watch in 5.1-7.1. No reason you can't have both. I tried a 2.2 set up with a tv for a year and could not enjoy it, I found myself going to other rooms to watch stuff. Two channel will never envelope you in a movie and HT will never give you the best for music, at least that is my findings.
