Holy smokes! If I have a XPA-3 Gen 3 can I buy those stereo modules and add them myself? Yes, you can update your gen 3 amp with stereo modules, and we’ll also have them available for build your own custom configurations. The custom configurations will be on the cart soon, but you can call now and order over the phone. Updating your current amp will be available very, very soon. Logistically, they have to come back to us for that upgrade.

Is it a different power supply in the 9&11 channel amps? I noticed them last night on the product page. They can do 3 or 5 channels @300 watts and remaining at 80. This is better than the XPA3 or 5. Just curious.

I thought it was the same as these modules will not work on the other chassis that will hold the 600W (double-wide) blades. I'll defer to Emotiva for the official answer, though.

I am looking at the XPA-9 just for that reason, 7.1.2. That would leave me open to eventually move to a pre in the future and not rely on the AVR amps for anything.

My guess is that if you do it wrong then your house burns down due to an amp fire, that might be a legal issue for Emotiva.......

So by that rationale I shouldn't be able to build PC either then, correct?

I think you are missing the point.....from Emotiva's standpoint it's a risk they want to mitigate by doing the work in house and ensuring the install is done to their specifications......

They’ve discussed this several times over the last year or so, well whenever the G3 was announced, I can’t point to a specific thread but it’s nothing new. I would guess they’d love to just sell amp cards you could install yourself, but in testing found that the possibility of error is great enough that the risk outweighed the reward.

I'm not buying that. If I can build a computer (and I have built dozens of PCs, servers, HTPCs, etc) then I can install an amp card. I'm looking at the pictures and it doesn't seem to be that complicated. I think this is a big misstep for them. I think it would have been awesome to install them yourself to allow you to change your setup in real time. That's my opinion. What's it going to cost to send that amp to and from California to Tennessee for example?

What's it going to cost to send that amp to and from California to Tennessee for example? Well we could debate it, and I’d even agree it would be great if we could do it, and I might think I’m capable as well, but they have decided to require the amp be sent in. Whether you’ve built a PC or built an amplifier, they feel it needs to be done at the factory and certified by their technicians (after all it is still under warranty). There are few if any amplifiers that can be modified like the G3, and probably fewer that can be repaired in your home. Yes shipping is expensive and you’re without your amp, but you get it reconfigured to meet your new needs for much less than selling and buying a new one. I’m sure many agree with you, especially those out of country, but it’s not our decision and debate or opinions won’t change that. You might call if you want a more exact explanation.

Thanks for the reply. I think shipping a massive amplifier to and from Tennessee (some may do this multiple times as their needs change) also isn't without risk to injury and possible malfunction of the amplifier itself. In fact I think its a major concern for me. Two questions: 1. How much does it cost for the "installation" of a card? I noticed that they are allowing their dealers to install the cards which is really interesting to me. Anything more than free for this service is simply unacceptable in my opinion. Others may disagree. 2. Why not allow the consumer to install the card themselves if they recognize that it voids the warranty?

I have no issues with Emotiva wanting to do the installs in house, but shipping these heavy amps back and forth is costly. I assume they would be shipped for full replacement value as UPS has been known to damage them in transit.
I'm sure everyone knows, but there are numerous DIY solid state as well as tube, amp modules, pre-amp kits, etc. for sale out there. Plus if an individual can buy a circuit breaker panel at Home Depot as well as replacement switches, outlets, romex, etc., I don't think it's any different than buying an amplifier module and performing the installation at home. Those that want to tinker or feel they have the expertise, would do so and others would not mind sending it back to the manufacture. I could be wrong, but I think a concern / issue here is down time as well as shipment damage.
That being said, I totally understand Emotiva's reluctance to allow the end user to perform these upgrades... it's a tough decision for sure.

I believe you can ship them via Emo's shipping rate/carrier - i.e. they set it up and you print out the label. If true, that helps mitigate the pain some at least.

My guess is that if you do it wrong then your house burns down due to an amp fire, that might be a legal issue for Emotiva....... Again... people have been building computers with 1000 watt power supplies for decades. Not sure why this concern would be relevant.
