I have a (final?) question for setting up my system.
I currently have my front left and right balanced outputs from my XMC-1 hooked up to my ARC Ref 6 through balanced input 4, in processor (home theater bypass) mode. I have my PS4 and Tivo hooked up through the XMC-1, and center and rears (surrounds) plugged into the XMC-1 for surround sound for TV and movies. This way, the Ref 6 controls volume for activities for everything else than TV shows and movies.
I have my CD player, FM tuner and streamer hooked up directly to the Ref 6 for stereo. That being said, I would rather hook the CD player and streamer to digital inputs on the XMC-1 and use its' (superior?) DAC and equalizer settings. The problem is that the balanced outputs are already used for bypass mode.
I found some y-splitter XLR cables on amazon. Could I use that to split the front L/R from the XMC-1 to Balanced 3 and 4 (keeping 4 in bypass mode) on the Ref 6? That wouldn't damage anything, would it? Then if I want to listen to my CDs and streamer, I could switch to input 3 on the ref 6, and the Ref 6 would control volume. If I wanted to listen to movies/TV, switch to input 4 and the XMC-1 controls volume. Are there any issues with y-splitters? I can't imagine there would be any, but I appreciate any tips. The other option would be to use the XMC-1 as the DAC and use the RCA connections for CD/Streamer. That way there's no concern with accidentally hitting input 4 while playing a CD and potentially annihilating my speakers, but it just seems inelegant.
