Hi everyone ! I'm in a serious doubt here. A couple of weeks ago, I ordered an SVS SB-1000 from a distributor here in Perú, that in fact is also an Emotiva distributor (where I bought my TA-100 ). Due to some delays (hurricanes, customs) the shipment of SVS has been delayed... and that gave me time to rethink my choice. I was wondering if for similar $$$ (just a bit more) wouldn't it be better to get dual Emotiva Basx S10s instead of the single SB-1000. I can't audition any of this equipment, so I'm left only with decissions based on things I read. I only want this for music (although I may use it for movies, I only really care for SQ in music), and I thought a good sealed sub was they way to go. Reading a lot more in this last weeks, I find that two or more subs are really much better to even out bass, but within my budget the best I can get are 2x S10s (ported). My room is not really big, about 2500-3000 cubic feet, in a rectangular shape, but the wall where I have the speakers, is the "long" side of the rectangle. It's about 22 feet long, 12 feet width, and about 10 tall. My listening position is a sofa , that is against the opposite wall, just in front of the speakers. Also.. on the wall where I have all the audio gear, I have a wall to wall wood bookshelf, so the speakers and sub will have to be "enclosed" in actual shelfs. My speakers are monitor audio bronze 2, (front ported) and I was also thinking in a sealed sub, since I will not be able to give it a lot of space to breathe. I have quite a lot of freedom to choose on which space of the bookshelf I can place it , in fact I have all the floor space that to use. Extremely loud volumes are not a concern for me either. I listen to quite different types of music , from Electronic to Classical (quite a lot ) Sorry if this isn't very clear, english is not my native langugage! Also, although I like great sound, I don't consider myself an audiophile with upgradetitis or such.. I have just built this system and I expect it to give me a good service for a loooong looong time. (my previous gear was a technics amp from the 90s with 1979 technics speakers for almos 20 years). Thanks for all you help and opinions !!!!

I've used 2 subs with bookshelf speakers and no subs with bookshelf speakers and a few tower speakers that lacked deep bass. The best integration I've had with bookshelf and 2 subs was with a Harman Kardon HK990 - it has built in room correction and will EQ two subs separately then integrate them with the mains. It did an excellent job IMO and the results were quite audible. Having speakers that can hit the low notes is IMO the best solution. The bookshelf speakers (Emotiva ERM 6.2's) were 'all in' at 80hz as designed by Emotiva so a sub was necessary. I was using a pair of DIY sealed subs that hit down to 28hz.
Your Monitor Audio 2's play down to 42hz according to MA website - no + or - spec is given though. I've often found that many speakers will have useful bass below the actual spec given. My song tower's bass extends well below the 42hz + or - 3db, more like 32-35hz with useful bass. Many other owners have reported similar results. Low enough that I don't use a sub for most serious listening.
As far as 2 subs go - how will you be equalizing/controlling the bass? One sub is easier to integrate with speakers than two - but if you hit the right setup 2 subs can be very good. If you have the electronics to help integrate two subs that will make it easier. Maybe you can post your electronics that are involved with your setup? FWIW I like sealed subs for music, although ported subs can do very well too. I use a single SVS SB12 for music when real low bass is present - classical music for one. The Elemental Designs ported sub is sloppy as compared to the SVS sub. I only use the ED sub for movie sound tracks.
FWIW there is nothing wrong with your English.

Hi again and first of all thanks for your responses.
Unfortunately I can't get any pictures of the space, I'm moving back to that house in three months, so I tried doing this "ASCCI" drawing (the S are the speakers the ww mean windows...)
DOOR BOOKSHELF DOOR -----__________________________-----| | |_S_______AMP/TT________S| | | | w | w | | ______________ | | | S | O F| A | / _______ ___|___|____|___|_________/
Regarding knuckleheads question of electronics, I have a TA-100 amp, so no bass management, crossover to mains, room correction whatsoever. I'm just left with the controls in the sub. Which raises the question regarding the better DSP control in the SVS vs the normal amp in the Emo Subs.
Also... considering the comment of using a single SVS for music when real low bass is present, I think that's exactly my case.. so I will probably stick with my decission of on SB-1000 and in the future.. if it doesn't sound good.. see if I replace the amp to get beter control over the sound /room correction, or a second sub.
Thanks everyone for your help !!!!!

People.. bump on this .. let me know if you can help me decide.. basically the same question is hanging on my head.. dual Emo Basx s10s vs single SVS SB-1000 for a room of about the following dimensions : 22 x 12 x 10 , hooking them up to a TA-100 + Monitor Audio Bronze 2 bookshelfs, without any kind of room correction /control over freqs other than the ones in the subwoofers. Also, this subs will be "enclosed" in shelves since the wall where I can place my gear has a bookshelf from floor to ceiling wall to wall.
I only care for music, movies/games is a plus, but great reproduction of music (classical, rock, electronic) is what drives this purchase.
Thanks for your help !!!! I really can't decide... I'm really worried than a single sub may not sound as nice as duals, but on the other hand, the sealed design of the SVS might be easier with placement, and integration to my mains.....

I thought you said you decided on the SVS? Are you still in two minds?
I can say that if I were you, I'd try out the SVS and see if you find anything lacking. I doubt you will. If you do however, you can return the SVS and try other options. Have you thought about the Emotiva S-12?
Personally I'm waiting for the S-15 from Emotiva.

Well I had! but again I faced more delays on the SVS so got me thinking again... Unfortunately here in Perú , returning is not an option, and the Emo dealer only has S10s in stock now, so .. yes.. I think I will wait for the SVS and well.. if I find I "need" a second sub , probably order another SVS when I get to save enough $$$... Thanks!

Call me a SVS fanboy, but SVS makes the BEST subwoofers for the money! Awesome build quality, clean and extended output, very musical and with a great warranty. I can't see how you could go wrong on this.

You'll just have to put a bit more effort into proper placement. You could always add another down the road if you feel you need to.

So.. in the end I had no choice since I'm moving back to my country (Argentina) and everything is more expensive. The svs sb-1000 did not arrive on time so I took the Emotiva S12 (S10 were not.in stock either). The first thing to say is that is quite large and hefty.. not sure what the wife's gonna say when she sees it. I just did a small test placing it against the wall just at the side of the left speaker and calibrating it roughly by ears at around 60hz the crossover (my monitor audio bronze have a rolloff at 42hz). I'm really impressed, the bass hits very low and it has complemented quite nicely my main speakers, its not overwhelming just blends nicely and shows some frequencies that were not there before. Also I watched a bit of season 2 of Stranger Things and the low freq rumbles and sounds where amazing. Very nice indeed although I wish it was smaller..

Well, I can say this, purchasing two SVS PB-1000 subs a few weeks ago was the best money I ever spent on my system. I have them inboard of the Emo ERT8 towers, and the sound is incredible. I kind of figured going dual would make a difference, but I never realized how much until I got them both up and running. Those 10" subs really do a nice job.

congratulations on the subs duals are the way to go IMHO , on another note you should try to move you sofa out from the back wall at lest a foot it will help make your bass sound better more even and the higher FR less congested
