If I plug in USB speakers to my laptop I get audio output, so that seems to indicate the file has passed through a DAC on the way out USB ports also. So does the sound file take a different path within the computer if I plug in a USB speaker (going through a DAC) rather than a USB cable (no DAC)? That does not seem likely, nor that a cheap USB speaker has a DAC. You would be amazed at how inexpensive some DAC chips are. All DACs are not created equal.

Nearly everything (except for turntables and the such) that produces analog sound has a DAC = this includes your tv, dvd player, possibly your alarm clock, phone, amazon echo dot, car radio/cd player, tablet.

Except that all of those items likely cost more than his speakers. When I hear "cheap", I hear $20~$30. Also, not all CD/DVD/BD players have DACs; some are just transports.

Not meaning to be insulting of course.
