I'll admit, I'm not into the whole "I" thing. No offence but it seems a bit like a Starbucks thing to me. Anyway, my bride always has the latest and greatest of the Apple world but, she has never learned how to stream music other than to some ear buds. So, is it as simple as using the same cord you charge with to plug in the rear USB and select that input? Or is it more complicated or maybe an easier or better way? I'm clueless.

By "Stream Music" do you mean play the music from the ipad to the XMC or do you pay monthly for a streaming service like Tidal or Spotify.
I myself pay monthly for Tidal and use my Oppo 103 to stream music to my system via the Oppo app on my phone, but I also have a MAc Mini that is connected to my system and I use the Apple Remote app on an old iphone to control playback of my music library on my Mac Mini through itunes.
But if your music is on your ipad then yes you would plug the ipad into the front usb on the XMC-1.

I highly recommend an Apple TV, even a Gen3 or Gen4 (old) can be purchased pretty cheaply on the used market. When your bride's (i)Device is connected to the same network as your AppleTV, then simply "swiping" up from the bottom of her device will allow her to "select" where she wants the audio (and video) to be "streamed" using AirPlay. Super convenient and WAF friendly.

Not just for music, also video, YouTube, web sites etc can be AirPlayed to the ATV. Life is very easy in the Apple universe, don't knock it till you have tried it Cheers Gary

But, I do think the front of the XMC-1 is only for firmware updates, strangely enough. I would like to try Tidal but not sure I can justify the cost for the amount f time I would use it. I'd really like to take the time to download our several hundred CDs to my network and have them easily accessible and cataloged. Oh, well, someday. As for now, I think she might like the Apple TV as a solution for now.

Rip those CDs in Apple Lossless format (playable on any iDevice) and you won't lose any of the original quality (its a bit for bit exact copy of the CD audio). iTunes will automatically import the CD art and metadata for you

Even better than using Airplay, just login to the iTunes, Spotify, Pandora, etc. apps on the Apple TV and leave the iPad out of the equation altogether, unless you want to use it as a remote.

Or just get a Bluesound Node 2 and use your iPad as interface. With the Node 2 you will have access to almost every streaming service, including TIDAL MQA and also you can access your iTunes library stored in your computer or NAS.

Yup, I have our "Shared" iTunes library on our network that I use my i(devices) as remotes for, but also sometimes will stream netflix/amazon/youtube/hbo/etc. directly from my i(device) because its quicker and easier than fumbling with a remote.

I use a Chromecast audio device to stream Spotify and Tidal. Very easy to do and not too expensive. I use a Raspberry Pi and Volumio to serve my iTunes library and the CDs I have ripped to my computer. Also, not very expensive or surprisingly easy to do. I have the Chromecast connected via Toslink and the Raspberry connected via USB.

Now I can stream from my iPhone 8, iPod Touch Gen.5 and even my Windows computers using the TuneBlade application (<$10.00). VERY easy and very slick!

I snagged five of these devices on craigslist a while back for $75, I plugged them into a cheap 8 channel amplifier and ran dirt cheap monoprice speaker wire (four conductor) to each room of the house and put in ceiling speakers. Super WAF, easy, cheap whole home audio solution. I purchased a bunch of the Emotiva ceiling/wall speakers when they were on clearance I've since replaced a couple of them (Living Room/Kitchen) with $35 Dayton Audio devices that support a little more functionality (pairing them, support for android/DLNA/Windows/etc.)

For playing music from an iPad, an Apple "Camera Cable" and regular USB cable that plugs into the USB connector on the BACK of the XMC-1 works well.
However, you don't get power over this means. If you want to charge it at the same time you need a third party adapter that provides a lightning passthrough on the same cable, and plug the original lighting cable into that and a charger. There are several models on Amazon, I have a generic one that works as well as the Apple cable and lets me power my phone/iPad at the same time. Search for "iphone camera cable with power" and you get lots of options.
