Hello. I tried to search for a topic to help diagnose how many speakers I damaged and came up empty. I believe I damaged them switching sources when the volume was still up. I have JBL Studio L Series L890 speakers and hear distortion in the high frequencies. Midrange and low frequency sounds okay but I would like to verify it with testing if possible. I’m driving these with a pair of XPA-2, bridged, through a UMC 200. I want to test the speakers to see what parts I need to hunt for. How do I test what tweeters are bad and if the mids got damaged as well? Thanks in advance for your time!!

You could swap components between the two speakers until the problem goes away. If you think it’s the tweeter, start there, if not that try the mid driver, then maybe the crossover. You could also use an oscillator (or an app) to isolate the frequency and hence driver, just be careful to keep the power down so you don’t do more damage.

Is it okay to just unhook the tweeter and play something? The damage is with both speakers so swapping parts is not going to help. I could run the EMO-Q but it does that pretty loud! Not to worried about further damage because it’s already broken and just needs to be isolated then repaired.
