Emotiva has discontinued many sizes of their rack ears and the ones that they do offer are more often than not out of stock with no specific availability anticipated. I'm thinking of taking the out of stock ones to my local sheet metal shop and getting a cost to have them duplicated. If I could offer duplicates of the rack ears that Emotiva won't produce, would you be willing to buy pairs from me?

I have no need for rack ears. All my equipment sits on dedicated shelves. I would think someone who changes equipment as often as you do would also benefit from this.

Hi vneal - I expect to end up with two options - A portable rack of lightweight equipment that I can take to parties and conventions and a more flexible set of open shelves in my living room where equipment can come and go. The gear in the rack won't change much. The equipment on the open shelves can be changed often. The rack equipment can and will also be used occasionally in the living room. The rack (a tilt-back mini-rack) can be stored in a closet when not in use. On the rack will be: crossover / equalizer / remote preamp / power amp. I may eventually consider a larger rack with a server computer & RAID drive as well. Most don't want or need rack equipment. I understand that. But those who DO want rack equipment are often unable to get the mounts they need due to Emotiva's failure to anticipate the demand. The majority of Emotiva's offerings for rack ears are not suitable for the size of current Emotiva equipment or else are out of stock (have been, are now, and will be). I don't want to compete with Emotiva, but since I'd be offering stuff that Emotiva either doesn't even list or else can't keep in stock, I don't think I'd be hurting their business at all...

What problems have you run into? There shouldn't be any issues using some equipment with ears and also using racks as they are all based on the standard RU.

On a back-tilted mini-rack, such as I have, the shelves offer no convenient way to secure the component. On a standard vertical rack, the shelves are horizontal, so less of an issue.

I bought ears for all my gear. I don't need ears at the moment, but given EMO's propensity to discontinue without warning, and not releasing parts as promised, I wanted to keep all my options open, without the dismay of not being able to get ears in the future.
Sincerely, /b

Im thinking the Sherbourn C-12 cooling units aren’t standard. spacing was difficult with them.

I'd love ears for my rack as I currently have the a XPA-1s on rack shelves and the A700 on one as well. I don't think I'd use one for the XPA-3 as it is on the bottom due to weight.
Keep us posted.

I'm waiting to see if Emotiva slaps me down for even suggesting this. Provided they don't object, and if the local sheet metal shop can provide equivalent products for a reasonable price, then maybe. Otherwise, we'll just have to keep suffering...
Other issues also come to mind - consistent production - exact dimensions - equal thickness and strength metals - paint and finishing - and perhaps most of all - legal liability. What happens if some Gomer tries to hang his 150# component from a set of rack ears rated for 50#? What will fail first - the rack or the rack ear? And lest you think that this is trivial, I've seen a photo of said Gomer actually CLIMBING the back of an equipment rack with his feet on the components. Do I want the headaches? Maybe - maybe not...

Back in the pro audio days I used to make my own rack ears. A 2.5 metre length of alloy angle (25 mm x 75 mm from memory X 5 mm) cost about $10 (probably gone up a bit since then). I could make quite a lot of different length (height) rack ears, just cut to the required length and drill the relevant holes. I used to then paint them with semi gloss from a spray can. These days I'd probably send them out to an anodiser for a nicer looking finish. Not that ears are all that visible.
Happy New Year to All Gary

Emotiva replied to my query and said that the rack ears are having to be modified to fit the different hole spacing of the BasX components. The design changes are approved, and the new rack ears are expected within "60 to 90 days."
I can wait that long.

Everyone here knows that Im pretty much an Emo guy BUT this line was fed to me 6 months ago about getting rack ears for my specific gear. No news to date. I was further told that my name and needs were put on a contact list when they came in. Still no word. So Im calling it!
