Movie 9
PQ 8
SQ 7
This M Night Shyamalan creation is about a man with 23 personalities (only 9 manifest themselves during the movie) who kidnaps 3 teenage girls with the ultimate goal of killing them - by the 24th personality called "the beast" who has yet to manifest himself in the man's mind. Barry, Hedwig, Patricia, Kevin and the others is played by Scottish actor James McAvoy with the female lead played by Anya Taylor-Joy along with Betty Buckley as "Split's"therapist. It is very interesting to watch Casey's (Taylor-Joy) interactions with the different characters in McAvoy's mind as she tries to win her release though coaxing and reasoning with the good personalities to let her and friends go before the bad ones re-emerge keeping then captive. The ultimate end will come when the beast appears to end their lives so the clock is ticking. Betty Buckley is very good as Split's therapist as she tries to mine through all of Split's personalities. She senses early on something has really gone wrong with her misunderstood very complex patient.
McAvoy has a very thick native Scottish brogue and to listen to him switch in and out of all those characters with some real genuine American accents and dialects is masterful. He is very, very good in this move and is an excellent actor. His performance is very believable and down right scary. No spoilers here so you will have to watch the movie - like all M Night movies there is a twist in the end.
Worth a watch.
