If the switch is always left on will the internal amplifier always be on as well? Or is there an auto-off feature similar to many self-powered subwoofers, and turn on again when it detects a signal?

No auto off, if the switch is on they are on and amplifying, hence using power and wearing out. I turn my 4's off when not in use.
