Per subject line, i'm getting a set. For their series age, how do these stack up against the newer XPA-100 (other than being 50 watts less) I will be using them with a XSP-1, Gen preamp and Magnepan MMG speakers. I would have rather found a XPA-2 Gen 2 that i could afford, but i am a poor old geezer on SS.............

Fast forward a few years and I purchased a pair of XPA-100's. Now, without having both side by side to do a comparison I couldn't tell you that there was much of a difference between the two models. However, my audio memory of them says that the UPA-1's were, perhaps, a bit warmer sounding than the XPA-100's, but only slightly. Yes, the XPA-100's have 50 wpc over the UPA-1's, however the latter has more storage capacity. Whether or not this makes a difference remains to be seen. Either way, you have yourself a wonderful pair of mono's, and they should drive your MMG's all day long without breaking a sweat!

I used a pair of UPA1s successfully with a pair of MG12s. I even posted a video on YouTube. They should be able to drive the MMGs.

What i didn't tell you guys is that there has been a XPA-2 Gen 2 available for a bit at a shop i frequent. What has prevented me from getting it is that the price, with tax is close to $800.00 which i just cannot swing, the UPA's are half that from a private owner. Another factor is the weight of that XPA,...77 pounds!!!! With a bad back an a couple of heart attacks that thing physically would be unmanageable!!!!! OTOH,the UPA-1 are 26 pounds each.

I have been running 3 UPA-1s for many years. No issues, never hot, dead nuts reliable. My main system is usually on for 6 or 7 hours a day during the week and much more than that on the weekends. sometimes at unreasonable volumes....they've never complained. I have run them with a USP-1 and currently an XMC-1. They should pair well with your XSP-1 and MMGs. Plenty of power.
