I wonder what the cost of retrofitting a 5-7 year old theater would be for Atmos? Most new theaters that are being built here in Houston have Atmos, and they have remodeled several other ones with Atmos as well. I just don't know if it makes financial sense to add just Atmos to a theater that is not really in need of any sound upgrades. How much extra traffic would you get for having Atmos compared to not having it?
As far as demos go in home one of the best one's is actually an app on my xbox one called Dolby Access. They have some animated videos and other clips that really show off what the system can do. They also have a few selected scenes from movies that are pretty sweet.

There’s 12 theatres/screens inside each main theatre. (4-5 of which are atmos) My bad I was counting screens. And there is another massive cineplex under construction in the se corner of the city. Either way, even my hick city with our sled dogs, igloos and what used be world famous stampede had each quadrant of the city covered for your atmos needs. Ahhh! Thanks 🙏 for that! I’m just continuing to monitor the object based format expansion. It is hyped as though it will be the format that eventually will eclipse all other, with or without overheads, but it’s slow to happen on a large scale it seems. The early adopter crowd is growing and I wonder if it will be larger on the home front rather than at the complex. Bill

I understand the frustration about Atmos...I have had my set up for a couple years and been tweaking things here and there to get everything sounding right. Alot of times the pre pro and or receiver have the height levels so low (after auto calibration) you might as have just 7.1 surround. I have finally got my set up sounding proper after numerous tests and tweaking. I had to not care so much about SPL meter levels and such. I feel it is a format to experiment with and have fun with...of course if funds allow and you get good deals on additional speakers, amps, and Atmos pre pro. I have attached pics of my basement Atmos set up...hopefully I did it right.

Just watched the new jumanji movie this weekend with one of my daughters. The overhead speakers added just that little extra that made the installation worth it. I absolutely hate going to the theater, better experience at home.

Just watched the new jumanji movie this weekend with one of my daughters. The overhead speakers added just that little extra that made the installation worth it. I absolutely hate going to the theater, better experience at home. I've found a way at my local theater, to enjoy going again while minimizing the "human factor"...... There is a center Isle break, where you are still far enough away from the big screen to enjoy without getting killed by it, and the isle gives you a hedge against people who forget (or don't care) about shutting down their own screens. We STILL enjoy 3D, and this theater shows some there, and that distance works well for it. The real trick beyond that is "matinee" so the crowd is relatively small. Sometimes, we nearly have the place to ourselves. There still is nothing like the big screen, so I still like going, even with a killer system back at the house. Looking forward to seeing the new Jumanji, and the original, on blu ray is still quite a treat. That was the first movie I heard with the 18" subwoofer. (we were talking about that for weeks.) Bill

Of course I don't know (and can't see) off to the left, how you use that part of the basement, but were I to offer any suggestions, I would say you are loosing the benefit of a broader soundstage up front with the mains so close to the set, and a relatively small center speaker compared to your rear and side speakers. That's part of the reason you may have struggled with SPL measurements and the reality of what's reaching your ears. If you could pull out 6 feet or so from the corner, and straddle those left side overheads to the other side of the ductwork, you may be sitting pretty. Additionally, you would be able to get more distance for the side and rear information. Bill

Hey Bill. I wish I could move the system but until the basement is finished that is the only location right now. The placement of my fronts sound great due to the bipolar design that gives me a wide sound stage. The center for this system is the matching Def Tech CLR2500 which does not get drowned out by the Def Tech BP 7002. When I mentioned SPL meter level I was referring to the Atmos height channels. The reason folks could be turned off by Atmos demos is that they do not use matching speakers to the base 5- 7 channel speakers and or have levels too low or too high. My experience with the Marantz AV7702 is that the levels for the height channels were too low (after auto-calibration) and my system sounded not much different than 7.1. I use two amps..one for heights and other for the base 7 channels. I was able to play Atmos blu rays with just the height info and get an idea of what I should be hearing and then leveled them up...tried using the SPL meter but that did the same thing as the levels were just too low at 75db. I used my ears with leveling the heights then turned the base channels on and would go back and forth until there was a natural blend between the heights and base speakers. We in the hobby are so stuck on things having to be at a standard level or crossover point and we are almost always told not to make adjustments based on our ears and people tend not to experiment. The experimenting enhances the experience and makes things fun. Remember in the end we are the ones that have to enjoy and listen to our system not the calibration mic, SPL meter and or calibration software.

Looks like all are bipole, save the center, Is that right? As you can see by my Avatar, I'm a wide dispersion fan also, and have been for longer then I care to admit! Like yourself, my ears are the endgame. I have Dirac, but I rely upon manual room correction. One day I'll get around to doing the sweeps, but not in any hurry. I have a growing collection of Atmos discs, but only because they were bought for 3D. With both of those in play it would be a massive assault on the senses, (in some cases) Bill
