I have a XSP-1 Gen2 that I purchased 2nd hand a year ago. The preamp has been working fine but now the display decided to quit. At the first the display was got progressively dimmer over time and then it just quit all together. I only rely on the display to see what the volume level is. When I index the dimmer button the dimness still works for the button but no display. I contacted Emotiva and they want a $100 just to diagnose the issue. They also said that there may be additional fees to complete the repair including part and shop time. This seems potentially excessive and vague from my vantage point. Has anyone seen issue before? Does the display itself need to be replaced or a perhaps a capacitor? I'm handy with a soldiering iron and open to a DIY fix at this point. Thanks in advance.

Does the unit still have warranty left on it? Was the warranty transferred to you when you bought the unit?

Personally I would send it to Emotiva or my good buddy novisnick and call it a day. 😋 The unit is well worth repairing IMHO. or, as you say “I only rely on the display to see what the volume level is.” Then just continue to use it. You can always make sure you turnthe volume down before turning it off and you’ll hearit get louder. Good luck! Let us know what you decide to do.

However, I don't get where the $100 to send it in is coming from. I didn't think Gen 2 units were over 5 years old yet. Diagnostics, parts, and labor should all be covered under warranty. Even if he has to pay to ship it, I'm sure Emotiva would give him their rate which shouldn't be more than $40 or so.

That's what I was wondering. (As far as I know, most or all XSP-1 Gen2 units are still under warranty.) The XSP-1 was sold new with a fully transferable five year warranty. That means that, if you bought one used, you're entitled to "whatever is left" of the original warranty. However, in order for this to work, the current owner is required to transfer their warranty to you. We consider the warranty coverage we provide our customers to be an important product feature. We urge anyone purchasing used Emotiva gear to make sure they get the warranty transferred to them when they purchase it. (And, please, get the warranty transferred when you purchase the gear; don't count on being able to locate the seller years later if and when you need service.) Does the unit still have warranty left on it? Was the warranty transferred to you when you bought the unit?

There was no transfer of warranty and the person At Emotiva was giving a ballpark stab at diagnostics. Better not to shock a customer. Also, the price should include return shipping. Emotiva point of view, Unit shipped for repairs and not payed for or picked up, I’ve seen this happen hundereds of times, Emotiva has a unit they have to hold onto untill they can legally sell it, 30-90 days in some states. What a PINA! That gets to be. So they’ve tied up resources ans space at the facility. Either way they need to insure a profit. Its a repair not a warranty job at that point. I have NO affiliation with Emotiva at all or in any way but its a business and needs to profit to survive in todays market. Lets say all my guess work is right, unit is shipped to Emotiva, tech spends time to diagnose and get authorization from owner to fix with estimate. $50.00 tech time to diagnose, $50.00 shipping and whatever else, parts and time to repair. Customer pays and is happy, Emotiva pays its bills and is happy. Win,,,,Win,,,,, NO? OR, Im talking out my butt and Don’t know Schiit! 😋

Thanks for the all of replies. I contacted the seller yesterday via email to see if he transferred the warranty to my name. He has not replied to my email yet. When I contacted Emotiva they only asked if I purchased the unit directly from them to which I said no and automatically took a non-warranty stance at that point. Agreed that the Gen2 is <= 5yrs old so it should be covered under warranty. I have support emails from Emotiva that date back to March 2017 when I asked them about the VFD display because it was so dim that I could hardly see it. The display issue has been slowly deteriorating over time until now where is doesn't work at all. Back in March with support it was chalked up to indexing the 10 display level and that it is what it is. I'm not opposed to paying a fixed fee of $100 to see it repaired back in my hands but the vague language of additional costs coupled by the fact that it was assumed that I have no warranty without any serial vetting has left a bad taste in my mouth.
This is exact quote from Emotiva.

I just bought a second hand XSP-1 Gen 2 off of Audigon, never thought / knew about the 5 year warranty hand-off. Needless to say, I too sent the guy an email.....guess I'll see what happens. In the meantime, this thing is a really nice piece of equipment ( fingers crossed ) and hope for many years of use. The Adcom 555ii it replaced never had an issue, it's in the closet just in case. I'll be following along to see how this turns out.
