So i was rockin the house this morning and saw smoke coming from one of my 18yr old paradigm studio 60v2 speakers...lol so I pulled the grill and saw the aluminum dome was shattered and smelled burnt. This is what i dont get. The tweeter still sounds fine. I went ahead and let them play at reference level for 2 hours and no wierd noises were audible. I guess i can expect it to quit working soon but just wondered if any of you have ever heard of something like this. I was planning on retiring them soon anyway as i have the T2s in my sights but need to sell these first. They have been great speakers and are mint so they are worth fixing for sure but read today that paradigm no longer has the tweeter to replace. Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks Dick

I have a Paradigm Studio Center channel that has been sitting in my corner collecting dust, if you wanted to pull the tweeter, this center might be of interest to you? The tweeter looks identical, but I'm happy to pull it and take measurements. where are you located?

pknaz...I do do believe that its the same tweeter if the center is from the same time frame...at least from what ive read. If you can send me the model number to verify that would be great. My zip is 67227 and if the tweet will work then i would be interested in buying it from you thanks. Dick

They can tell you which tweeters are interchangeable, etc.
I run old Allison’s, and collected spare two way and 3way tweeters on EBay, as an insurance policy in case I have the same problem.
Recently, I had all of my original woofers rebuilt with surrounds and spiders đź•· ( nothin lasts forever)

"Blowing the dome off a tweeter" and making it smoke means a couple of things. 1) If it is a a dust cap it has to be a cone tweeter. Cone drivers do not need the dust cap to function, which is why it is still making sound. They can fall off over time because the glue can become dry. It is a simple matter to glue it back on, and for best performance you should. If it is a dome tweeter that you blew the dome off, it is not a dust cap it is the diaphragm and it is destroyed. 2) Making it smoke means you have damaged it due to over-power. This means you either need to turn it down because your amp is too powerful for the speaker, or your amp is clipping by operating beyond it's max level sending excessive high frequency power to the speaker that you cannot hear, again meaning you need to turn it down (and it also means your amp is too small for your desired listening level.)
I always recommend replacing any driver that you have smoked, as at the very least it means the voice coi is no longer going to perform to factory specs.

This is the tweeter I pulled, the only "model" number I can find on the back of the speaker is L4L3P5. The speaker is from the late 90's, some time between '97 and '99 Visually, the tweeter looks exactly like the one used in the Studio V2 series speakers.

pknaz...I will pull the tweeter and look at it tonight and get back to you. DYohn, thanks for your reply and I respect your opinions as I have read many of your contributions here. It was a very strange thing i witnessed and i was not at clipping volume. The dome actually shattered into pieces and was very thin. smoked for a second and then carried on like it was no big deal.I have always thought those tweeters were a bit bright lol and have my eyes on a new set of main towers for 2ch. only. I have it narrowed down to 3 that i have never heard but have what im looking for as far as needs. JBL studio 590s klipsch rp-280f and emotiva T2 as you can see i like it loud clear and in your face at times and i want to get rid of the sub im using with the studio 60v2s it just seems to be a little late and not punchy enough. I want to keep it at 1000.00 oh wait i mean the boss said 1000.00 tops so any input from you guys will be appreciated. Thanks Dick

I haven't heard any of those speaker choices myself but based on their brand reputations I'd expect the Klipsch to be the most forward and "in your face," the JBL to have the best bass, and the Emotiva to be the most balanced and musical overall.

That is kinda what im thinking also. I will probably go with the T2 as im very pleased with my emotiva gear. Im sure they will give me what I need and more...hoping to read more opinions on them as time goes by. Thank you for input....also the paradigm is a pure aluminum dome w/ferro fluid cooling so im still shocked its working as it should not be. i agree that it should be destroyed.

What you're hearing is likely the voice coil still making noise but I highly doubt the output is anywhere close to what it should be. If the dome literally is gone then the only thing that could be making noise is the suspension assembly, and this assumes the VC is still intact.

I just talked to paradigm and they said it may work....the numbers are done in series so alot of them were interchangeable. He said if we knew the cc model it would narrow it down but anyway i would be interested in it if you want to shoot me a price? thanks Dick

DYohn...Thats exactly what paradigm said. There is a very slight difference i hear now upon very close listening. That said i guess i can send both tweeters in to them for a rebuild for 300.00....kinda cost prohibitive as they are only worth 500.00 anyway. Hopefully the tweeter that pknaz will work. thanks Dick
