Ive given up with rear ported speakers in my small wood paneled downstairs den (lack of bass control). Right now I’ve moved down phase tech pc 60 ca closed cabinets from my upstairs system and they work fine, but that leaves a gap in my upstairs system. If I decide to move the phase techs back, are there any other closed cabinet smallish bookshelves in say a 500-2000 range worth considering for the downstairs?
I suspect it makes more sense to look at new speakers for the upstairs where I could choose from a wider variety ( since i would not be limited to closed cabinets there) and keep the phase techs in the downstairs study, but want to explore all options.

In the $500 range, I would go with polk audio rti a1 or a3 series. They are designed to be hung off a wall (or placed right next to it) because they use a flared rear port, which directs the air sideways instead of into the wall. They are gorgeous, with a tear-drop shape (not just a plain rectangle), and the craftmanship is second to none. They sound really good too, the tweeter is silk dome so not unbearably bright like some of their competition (paradigm). www.polkaudio.com/products/rtia3

Monitor Audio Bronze 2- front ported. (499) Saw a pair (open box) on ebay for $359 today. I luv MA, but some do not because they are very sensitive to lesser quality electronics and you'll hear it. The C-Cam drivers can be bright and need to be matched to your equipment. I prefer my Monitors with Denon/Sony ES not as much w UMC-200/Yamaha, I believe it's the DACs (I like Burr-Brown DACs)

SVS Ultra, Elac B6, KEF LS50 I love those Kef's. Knocking on the side of the LS50 is like knocking on concrete, they have absolutely no problem with cabinet resonances. They are rear ported though, just not sure if that's going to work specifically for this use case. And they really work best in an open room with lots of empty space in all directions. Guess you could alway use the provided "bung" that comes with them and plug the rear port.

I have the NHT in my casual listening area (living room) powered by a Sonos connect:amp and they sound fantastic.
They are also in a built-in bookshelf/cubby

Thanks for the advice everyone. Im currently suffering an existential crisis with my choice of speakers for my main. 2 channel system. Until I resolve that, I’m putting new speakers for the den on hold.

Bowers & Wilkens front ported 685 S2 or 686 S2 depending on the amount of room available. Just read the last post. Nevermind.
