I received my ERC-1 last Thursday (May 21). As per usual Emotiva standards, the packing was first rate.
First let me say that this is a beautiful CD-Player, solidly constructed, heavy and it matches well with my other equipment and component racks.
I was able to do a direct A/B comparison with my Marantz DV-6001 Universal player which is hooked into my 5.1 input and set to Audio-Direct. I hooked up the CD Player into the CD RCA inputs and set that to Audio-Direct. (I will use the balanced outs to my Anthems two-channel balanced in for convenience only when Emotiva releases their cables). I haven't had a chance to compare my SACDs to Redbook yet and won't be able to until I get back from my trip to Burbank this week.
I have copies of just about all my cd's for my truck so I brought in the cases and went through a few cd's. I would put the original in the Marantz the copy in the ERC-1 and then switch after the song.
Jeff Beck - Blow By Blow - Cause We've Ended as Lovers - No comparison, the ERC-1 was clearly superior in every way. There seemed to be no dynamics with the song in the Marantz and seemed flat where the ERC-1 seemed more alive.
Loreena McKennitt - An Ancient Muse - Again no comparison - Loreena's songs are intricate masterpieces and the ERC-1 brought out everything where the Marantz again sounded lifeless.
Al Dimeola - Elegant Gypsy - Mediterranean Sundance w/ Paco DeLucia - Again the ERC-1 revealed all the dynamics and subtleties in this acoustic piece. The guitars sounded like an acoustic guitar should sound, whereas with the Marantz again it was lifeless.
I could go on but I think you get the point. Is it fair to judge a Universal player against a dedicated player? It's all I have so I really had no choice. When the DV-6001 was first released I believe the MSRP was $599.00. I paid $499.00 for it. It does a lot more than the ERC-1 obviously but that's not the point. The music is.
And for Redbook CD the ERC-1 had the Marantz for lunch in every way. Everything through the ERC-1 was more dynamic, engaging and lifelike. Which is in my opinion what music is about. If the music doesn't engage you or elicit a response why listen.
The ERC-1 will be staying in my system for a very long time.
And yes BigRed I will post pictures of the ERC-1 and the 8.3's in my setup. Hopefully after work tonight.
