I’ve seen that there’s quite a few guys here running different Linux derivatives, I’ve recently made the switch from windows. I’ve gotten everything working on my pair of machines, one running dietpi as a “headless” server for plex and nas storage. The other is running Zorin 12 which is just a gnome based Ubuntu distro. Anyway, what I’m having issues with is I can’t get wine or play on Linux to install and/or load my anthem arc software (.exe) or the my harmony app (.msi) Arc actually installed but I can’t get it to load. I still have windows 7 installed on another drive but would much prefer to never have to boot that OS again. Lol. Anyway. Thanks in advance.

You could load windows in a virtual machine inside of the Linux box and run the software from there.

It would probably be easier to get Wine working properly. Running a VM has it's own limitations - usually trying to allocate external & CD/DVD drives. The VM will not share any resources it manages to allocate. At least that's been my experience. I no longer bother with VMs.
Is there any error message when you attempt to load the Anthem software? The .exe file should be placed in one of Wine's folders.

You could try to set up the Harmony directly in Linux, but it may not be that easy : Harmony set up in LinuxIf you tried to install the .msi file from Wine, did you do it via the terminal? It should install using the msiexec program from the terminal like this: wine msiexec /i MyHarmony-app.msi As for the other software, it just may not be compatible with Wine.

Yes that’s how I tried to install the harmony app. I must be missing something or doing something incorrect somewhere. When I try to install via msiexec I get errors. I’ll post a terminal screenshot shortly.

I Found this- OK my Linux friends, I found a solution. I found a GUI in the Ubuntu Software Center called Congruity that with Concordance and the harmony web site. First three trys were unsuccessful. Got on the Harmony Support and for a way to reboot the remote as it was not being found by Congruity+Concordance app. Took the remote batteries out, reconnected and started again. This time the remote connected to my laptop and the apps did their thing. So now I can update my Logitech Harmony 650 universal remote with my Ubuntu OS laptop. I am assuming that WINE was used in this but really not sure it was at all. The Harmony 650 can now be done with Linux. I've never played around with Wine in Linux Mint, but keep an old HDD with win 7 for -"have to have" apps. and this site- williamfriesen.com/2017/07/09/logitech-harmony-linux.html

I've tried to get Congruity/Concordance working on my Linux (Ubuntu 17.10LTS) box with zero success, which is the only reason I still have a Win partition on the boot drive. If Logitech would only bring back the browser based update tool there'd be no problems. I've emailed them several times and got no answers.

It's "almost" appearing that keeping the windows drive connected for the odd time it needs to be booted may be the best course of action. I'm running into issues trying to get devices synced and even recognized in the virtualbox install. Why won't the app makers recognize the growing number of linux users in the world. ARRRRGGGHHH..Lol The struggle is real..haha

It would probably be easier to get Wine working properly. As the posts have shown, it's not always easy to get Wine working properly.

I've been most successful getting NewsBin Pro (newsreader) to work through Wine. It doesn't always work like it should but at least I don't have to boot into Windows most times.

Running a minimal virtual machine to satisfy just two programs isn't ideal, but at least it's a working solution until a way is found to use Wine and/or a native Linux app.

So I'm experiencing an odd issue. I've recently switched OS over to Ubuntu Mate 16.04, I'm having issues keeping my little ego connected as a usable device. I originally thought my usb cable went bad but now it's happening again with a new cable. I need to unplug the usb cable from the pc and reconnect then reassign audio to the little ego. This sometimes works for a few minutes or a few days, I'm at a loss and out of ideas.
Thoughts ??

In case it helps, that's not "normal" behaviour; My big ego works perfectly on the last few versions of ubuntu (16.04 included) and other distro's I've tried. Maybe try login as a brand new user (new home dir) in case something got messed up in your user specific configuration? You could try posting your relevant "dmesg" messages too, in case the kernel is reporting that the device is disconnecting all the time. It could be a hardware issue (device itself, or cable, or usb port), or a software issue (pulse audio can be a bear at times). Really hard to say at this point.
So in a terminal, type "dmesg" and hit enter, you'll see some messages scroll by. Then unplug your ego, wait a few seconds, plug it back in, then type "dmesg" in the terminal again. At the very bottom of the output, you should see something similar to this:
ignore the "powermate" stuff, that's my little volume control which you won't have. But you can see the first log message is showing the usb disconnected from the kernel, then a few seconds later after I plugged it back in, the kernel sees the device reattached and then reconfigures it.
So if you notice the problem again where the ego disappears, re-run the dmesg command immediately, and see if you're getting the "usb disconnect" message. If you are, it's probably a hardware issue (device itself, or cable, or port; try a different cable and/or port). If you don't see that message, then it might software related (pulse audio just being flaky in which case running software updates might help or nuking your user config and trying again etc)

Thank you copperpipe I’ll see what it says when I get home from work. I didn’t have any issues wth the other 5 distros I’ve tried in the last few months, it has been isolated to this install of Mate. I’m just so impressed by the overall stability and speed of mate I really want to make it all work.

so here's the dmesg printout after the little ego disconnected on me.. This has happened with 2 different cables and 2 different ports. Gonna try a 3rd cable and port.

Ok, it looks like you are getting a disconnect with another device too. "usb 2-4" is the messages for you little ego, and there is also disconnect messages for "usb 3-1". Do you have anything else plugged into the same usb hub?
I would try plugging the little ego directly into the usb port on your computer (don't use hubs, or usb extension cables; just the little 1 foot usb cable that came with the ego). Then make sure no other device is plugged into the same usb hub in your machine. It might be a case of drawing too much power through one hub, I've had that before with usb wifi adapters and hard drives.
If you can... unplug anything usb in your machine, and just keep the little ego plugged in for a bit, see if you get the disconnects. But again, don't use USB extensions, just the little 1 foot cable and plug directly into your machine.

The other disconnect was a PlayStation controller I had charging. I unplugged it to use the USB port. I don’t have any hubs plugged into that pc. Just the case ports from the header on the mb. I’ll dig up the original cable and try again from a port direct on the mb.

copperpipeJust wanted to say thanks again for trying to help out. It seems that the last update installed fixed the issue. I haven’t had a single disconnect.. knock on wood. Anyway cheers.
