It could be a driver magnet... but it could just be a wooden brace that's popped loose. (I've also seen coils in the crossover pop loose and flop around.) If they sound OK, it really might be worth pulling out one driver and taking a peek inside..... I suspect that one has some internal damage - When I move the cabinet I hear something loose clunking inside (never a good sound). Not wanting to bother taking them apart to investigate, I plan to sell them "as is." I'll keep slowly dropping the price until someone wants them. They aren't for me. Oh darn....the clunk noise isn't good....

"As Is" without knowing they work? I wouldn't give you more than $20 for them. Which is why I don't sell to you! LOL Either someone will want them or I'll have to fix them.

Hi Boom, I currently own a pair of SDA-1A's they are like yours but the tweeters are black, and also a pair of the original SDA-2's with the silver tweeters. My brother in Chicago came to Vegas to buy a pair of SDA-1B's from snacker. When he got them back to Chicago he had something rattling around in side. I talked him through taking the large passive radiator off he discovered that one of the plastic boards popped loose from the crossover all he did was snapped it back in place you probably have the same problem with yours. Do you have the interconnect cable? If you use them with the interconnect cable you can only use common ground amps with them. DO NOT CONNECT THEM TO MONO BLOCK AMPS you could damage your equipment, or the speakers. I paid $350.00 for my SDA-2's they are cherry no scratches all drivers are intact and functioning , my brother paid snacker $400.00 for his SDA-1B's which is what he paid for them, and then two months ago snacker gave me the pair of SDA-1A's he brought local here in Vegas for $100.00 without the interconnect cable. He didn't know if they worked until he brought them over to my place a couple weeks later and we hooked them up they sound great. He left them here never took them to his place he has no room for them with Pendragon's, and Double Impacts. It will only take a few moments to remove the passive driver even if you don't have a power screw driver and it has no wires connected to it. Give them a listen they still sound decent even without the interconnect but you'll be missing the stereo dimensional effects. Yours are the original SDA-1's they and the original SDA-2's have the external fuses on the rear of the cabinet and the silver tweeters. Oh and by the way check the fuses if you aren't getting any sound I had two blown fuses on my SDA-2's I didn't even realize it until I got them home.

I may pull the big passive & have a look inside anyway. Once I get them up & running, I'll take a listen. If they aren't to my taste, I just want to get my money back on them. And, alas, I don't have the connecting cable, but I'll bet I could make one...

Boom,
Actually snacker said the same thing about making the interconnect. We even looked for the plug which is unique It has two flat blades one wider than the other but not a standard plug used for everything. If you find the plug please let me know.

Look among the European DIN stuff - I've seen similar plugs there.

WHOA! When I took off the passive radiator of the Polk with the loose item inside, I found a woofer magnet loose at the bottom of the speaker. The good news is that it wasn't stuck to anything else and was easily removed. The bad news is that it isn't something you can just pop back on. I tried... The woofer's voice coil former bound so badly against the uncentered magnet's pole piece that the woofer wouldn't move at all. Fortunately, I didn't damage the voice coil former with the attempt.
Now I'm on the way to the local "Bob & Ronnie's Live Music" store (I know the owner) to let them center the magnet inside the voice coil as it is glued back on. An additional expense, but a necessary one to have a functioning pair of speakers.
I'm honestly disappointed that Polk didn't provide screws to center the magnet (and its pole piece) so that this wouldn't be necessary, but after all, this is consumer-grade stuff...
I looked on youtube for "how to fix it" videos, and there are a plethora, but all involve either the use of custom PVC jigs to center the magnet from the rear of the speaker frame or else stripping off the dust cap and using shims to center the magnet around the pole piece from the front. The jigs aren't worth my time, and I'm not comfortable cutting off the dust cap. So off to the repairman.
Just to be on the safe side, I tried moving all of the remaining seven woofers in this speaker pair - All move freely, so I'm expecting them to be OK. I'll test them individually once the errant woofer is repaired.

And I'm told that it's cheaper to buy a new woofer than to have the old one repaired. About $60 via eBay.
I don't want to bother. I've dropped my price to $75 / pair on the local CraigsList. Maybe someone wants to fix them.

David doesn't need (or want) them. But some local college student will! Unless the finish is pretty messed up, it may be worth it to try the driver. You may enjoy the results. But I can see there's a definite risk .You don't know if the speaker will work even with the new driver or not.

The speaker WILL work with the new driver. I've dropped the CraigsList price to $70 / pair. When Summer semester starts at LSU, they'll sell.
