I work and sleep on a boat.. at night I have a tiny stateroom and like to listen to music with headphones..
I was thinking about buying the EMO basX preamp, plus an inexpensive Onkyo cd player with digital output... plug some good headphones into preamp and enjoy the sound without waking up anyone.
this seems to be an easy start and kinda minimalist.
Would this work? Seems it should sound terrific with good headphones. Later I can add an amp and speakers if I desire.

I hear ya.. was thinking that too, but may add an XPA2 at some point, so thought to get the pre amp instead

The TA-100 can be used for a preamp or like receiver with 50w outputs.

No... what I mean is, for now, basX preamp and a cdplayer with headphones.... later maybe add an XPA2 amp and speakers (to use at home or something) at home I have an emo CD100 with an older Amp/preamp system. So possible to update all of that later from what I'd have on my work boat. Just wondering if playing cds through the digital out to a basX preamp into headphones will sound good ... without an amp.

Sure.... In general, for most headphones, you shouldn't NEED a separate headphone amplifier. The headphone outputs in all of our equipment sound very good with a wide range of headphones. I will mention, however, that there are some certain few brands and models of headphones that are specifically difficult to drive (or difficult to drive well). Those include some specific models of older planar headphones, which require a lot of power to drive, and very high impedance headphones (600 Ohms), which require a lot of voltage to drive. Those few special models really require a more specialized headphone amplifier... or something like the headphone output on our A-100. (If you haven't purchased your headphones yet, just check around, and avoid the few specific models that are widely described as being "difficult to drive" and you'll be fine.) However, for the vast majority of "normal" headphones, the headphone output on one of our BasX preamps will sound very good. No... what I mean is, for now, basX preamp and a cdplayer with headphones.... later maybe add an XPA2 amp and speakers (to use at home or something) at home I have an emo CD100 with an older Amp/preamp system. If you had a more demanding headphone like Sennheisers $200 massdrop units I would suggest going with the Basx A-100 as your amp choice. It is phenomenally good at what it does with headphones. One of the most powerful headphone amps on the market. It also does quite well with speakers. It ran my hard to drive well Axiom m80's without any issues. On the cheaper side I also really liked the Audio technica ATH M50 for $150
