I heard someone's LG V30 today.. streamed Tidal, listended to audio files,[ flac and MQA].. wow. With his over the ear headphones, this phone is frickin awesome.. has a very good onboard DAC, not sure of the specs, but it will play up to 96k (I think).. whatever the case....also has removable MicroSD cards (2) .. I found my solution to "on the road" and at work (on the boat) music. That is all. Will likely sell my Little Ego once I upgrade to that. Unless, I can use it for a different reason.

Were you able to hear the SAME music in MAQ and FLAC? If so, anything to report? What kind of 'system' was this deviced connected thru?

I've had the LG V30 since it launched in the fall. My previous phone was the LG V10. (anyone sensing a theme?) I haven't listed to MQA with it but I can say in my ever so humble opinion, when used with decent wired headphones you won't find a better sounding phone.

Do you still have to use the desktop Tidal to get MQA?

One thing I have done was stream Tidal through my Older Galaxy Note 5.. Using my AKG headphones and compared it with same headphones using my V30 streaming tidal, and the quality through the V30 easily topped the Note. I also listened to standard CD rips (.flac files) through both.. V30 easily sounded far better. From what I read.. You would need to load hires files into the V30 and play through the LG supplied music player in order for the DAC to process MAQ music... There's quite a bit of info on this. I did stream Masters music through the phone, but I have no way of knowing whether the DAC reads it and plays at the higher sample rates. Supposedly, the V30 music player will indicate sample rates.. But not while streaming music. And I haven't gotten to the point of digging into all this.. Im just kinda blown away by how nice music sounds using the V30. The amp really kicks in when higher impedance headphones are used.

Do you still have to use the desktop Tidal to get MQA? From what I read in this article .. You should be able stream Tidal Masters through the V30 .. And probably any of their other phones that use the Quad DAC... If not now.. It is very close to being now. www.stereophile.com/content/lg-v30-hi-res-smartphone-mqa-page-2

How large is an MQA file compared to the SAME tune in either ALAC or FLAC? Or MP3-160 or MP3-320, for that matter?
Memory is cheap these days My phone has 128gb.....or is it 256? But that's a LOT of music should I choose to fill it up. I know the MP3-160 files on it NOW, don't make a dent.

MQA Masters can be web based on this phone but Im not sure its a hardware decoder. It would be nice! Masters showing up indicates its web based which gives you the second unfold. Hardware gives the third unfold as far as I know. Perhaps this phone does but it needs to be confirmed.

And when I select a non Master title,it drops down to Hifi level.. And back to Masters when I go back to a Masters album. Thats because the Hifi song is not incoded as a Masters, Its just an indicator that the song is a master not the decoding. Dig a little deeper and let us know.

That's why I'm pretty sure the DAC is recognizing the hires files and showing Masters.. A few ago, it would not do this.. I'd get a message it was, only available on a desktop app... Now Masters will come on when I play a Master albums. According to the link above in a previous post.. Tidal was working this feature out.

This phone's DAC is MQA capable. All DACs are MQA capable but only a MQA haredware DAC will get the last unfolding. Tidal will stream and lable all of the music thats MQA encoded, thats not the question. Even without the final unfold the benefits of MQA is obvious on most tracks IMHO

Very interesting to read. Lots of good points.. But as he writes towards the end, it doesn't have to end on a sour note.
