I am looking at getting a 4k player that will for right now connect to my 1080p Sony Projector. The reason I want a 4k player is that most of the Atmos movies are only coming on the 4k versions of the disc, not on the standard blu-rays. I have an Xbox One X right now that plays 4k's, but when watching 4k discs on my projector the picture is very dull and dim. I compared the 4k version of Star Wars last night to the Blu-Ray version (4k on Xbox X, Blu-Ray on PS4) and the picture from the PS4 was vastly superior to the Xbox.
Now I don't know if this is from the 4k being "down graded" on a 1080p signal, or if the Xbox X player is just not very good (for reference the Xbox is doing the downgrading as it is set to send out a 1080p signal). I will eventually get a 4k projector but it may be next year before I do it (I am waiting to see if the next gen Sony's will do Dolby Vision).
Has any one had any experience doing this? I could do one of two things I guess.
1) Buy a +/- $200 player from Best Buy and try it out. If it works out great, if not it is easy to return. 2) Just go with an Oppo 203 (don't really need the 205's audio outputs) and be done with it.
Let me know what you guys think.
Just to add I do not care at all about the streaming options of any players, I'll still use my Apple TV for any streaming.

Have you tried setting the X Box to allow a 4K output and letting your projector downgrade the signal, or will this not work?

When I go to the video output settings it only lets me select 1080p or below. I am assuming that it gets a signal from the projector telling it what inputs it is capable of accepting.

Since you haven't just gone out and bought a 4K projector I assume budget is a consideration. This was the case for me especially as the Australian price for Oppo's is almost as rediculous as the Australian price for Emotiva gear. I had my cousin's 203 while he was sailing the pacific for 4 months and I really liked it, but back to back with the Sony 800 at less than a third the price I couldn't tell the difference, that's video or audio (using a UMC-200). It also plays SACD's which was another consideration.
Cheers Gary

Cheers Gary Budget is a little bit of a consideration in the fact that if the $200 Sony is as good as the $550 Oppo 203 then why spend the extra $350, but it is not entirely the main driver. On the projector front I going to blame/love Emotiva on that one. My Marantz 7009 does not support 4K HDR via HDMI so I am waiting to purchase either the RMC-1 or XMC-1 gen 3 so I can get 4k to the projector. Once I get the new processor I will then get the new projector. In a way the delay is actually working out since the 4k projector market is getting better all of the time. My hope is that in Oct. or so when Sony has their new model of projectors released they will support Dolby Vision (or HDR 10+)

With the saving I can get an MC-700 (I have 25% UFL), so the comparison for me was MC-700 & Sony 800 versus Oppo 203 & UMC-200 (that I currently have), truly a no brainer decision. I haven't completed that scenario yet, a used XMC-1 + updates is tempting, but time is running out, the torture is wearing me down. Plus our import GST situation changes on 1st July and it will cost me at least 10% more after that. Tick tick tick Cheers Gary

FWIW i have a 4k tv that does WCG but not HDR and i have a Oppo 203 which strips HDR meta data and i have watched movies in both 4k and BD and i find some movies in 4K are definitely darker. I have 2 modes set on tv ,one for 4k an done for BD. I looked into it with google search's and i am not the only one that has had this experience. Maybe see if someone could loan your a 203 for a test drive.

If you are interested in Dolby Vision 4K blurays then your only choice (right now) is the Oppo.
