Hi guys, I have the Marantz CD6005 player and I'm in a search for SQ improvement (the rest of the equipment is already in high level). I was thinking about replacing it with the ERC-3. Do you think there would be a significant SQ improvement? Also, does the ERC-3 display shows only track number and time or it can also show CD text as with the CD6005?
Appreciate a quick response as I have someone who's interested in my CD6005.
Thanks!

No idea on sound comparison but ERC-3 display shows only track and time info.

For an upgrade in sound you can buy the sa-8005 or get a separate dac and use the 6005 as transport.

I hate to be the spoiler here, but the Stealth DC-1 DAC I think will really impress. You keep all the functionality of your Marantz, but get the analog stage and the DAC that the ERC-3 is based on. Hope this helps.

I agree, keep the cd6005 and add a different dac on its Digital outputs.

Hope this helps. I thought about the DC-1 but- 1. I don't need another preamp (and another volume control) in the chain and as far as I understand there is no regular line-out ports on it. 2. It is no longer produced so used is the only option and it's a pretty rare device as I found out so sellers charges high money which I could spend on a player with the same DAC

I had the emotiva cd-3, but I preferred and kept the Marantz SA-8005. to me it sounded better, and works really well with my set up.

There is a setting in the UI for “Fixed” or “Variable”.

OK, that’s good, but what about the DAC itself- if they are the same on the DC-1 and the ERC-3 and if this DAC sounds as good or even less good than the DAC on the CD6005 then I don’t get the desired SQ upgrade. Do I?

Difficult to quantify additional sound quality in of itself. SQ is a personal thing. Just because something might cost more doesn't always mean it's better. Difficult to say since we all perceive SQ differently. The DC-1 and or the 8005 might not be nirvana for you. Our hobby. Joy. I know for me allot of great DACs are around. Players not so much.

Do I? Although the DAC is the same there are twice as many DAC channels in the DC-1. Hence the implementation is different, the circuitry post and pre the DAC chip is also different. Within that circuitry the engineer/designer can "tune" the sound to quite some degree. As to whether the ERC-3 or the 6005 sounds "better" is a mute question, to my ears they sound very slightly different, but I can't say one is "better" than the other. Personally I prefer the sound from the ERC-3, but that just means I like its "difference", not that it sounds "better". DAC's are somewhat a personal preference in regards to their sound, for example no matter how they are "tuned" I don't like Sabre DAC's, but there are plenty that love them. Cheers Gary
