My Samsung Note 5 reached the end of its life and after a few weeks of research I decided to go with the LG V30.
For the past couple of days I've been in heaven.. The onboard hifi DAC is amazing. This was the main reason I bought the phone after reading numerous reviews of its audiophile capabilities.
Plug in any headphone up to 600ohms,
and it will adjust volume to accomodate. The onboard DAC is excellent.. Hifi turns itself on automatically when headphones are plugged in and the volume control converts to 75 step increments, which is really nice.
In Hifi mode, you have a selection of 4 filters, and can manually adjust balance for left and right speakers if needed.
I'm using a pair of AKG M220 Pro headphones, streaming Tidal, and I'm about as happy as can be. Max storage is 64gb,but it has a micro SD slot so you can go up 2TB SD storage.
This has solved my little problem of listening to music during the week while out in the field, and in my room onboard, or at hotels.
Besides the latest Android OS, it uses the Snapdragon 835 64-bit octa-core processor, 6-inch QHD+ P-OLED display, 4GB of RAM and 64GB onboard / 2TB microSD of internal storage.
The V30 meets MIL-STD-810D specs and IP68 water rating.
A couple of website's did repeated drop tests and could not break the glass or phone, although minor dings were noted.
I was able to go the whole day with heavy web use and streaming, and still have about 30% battery by the time I hit the hay.
Ref to the drop tests:

Good review:
(This guy hits the display pretty hard, but for me, it's quite dazzling)

Hope this helps anyone looking to update their smartphone.
