two of my friends would like to have their "first" ever home theater system, budget is around $1000 for 5 speakers & $500 for a subwoofer, another $500 for a receiver.
Their houses are pre wire(four corners of the room, close to the ceiling) for the speakers so they want to make use of that. That means speakers' size must be small enough to hang on the wall.
Suggestions outside of Emotiva? A package system including speakers, subwoofer, and receiver will also be considered.
Airmotiv E1 is my choice for now.

If they can stretch their budget a bit I'd suggest Ascend CMT-340 SE for LCR with CBM-170 SE as surround and Rythmik L12 as sub. Or, to stay even under budget and have a more "hang on the wall" option, CBM-170 as LR, HTM-200 as Center and surrounds and same sub. Other combinations of those three speakers can also be made. www.ascendacoustics.com/pages/products/speakers/spkrlist.htmlI am sure others will have additional suggestions. SVS, Elac and Fluance are good options too for systems that won't break the bank and yet offer very respectable performance, but I have no direct experience.

I doubt you can get better sound for the money than RSL.

Something like this should be decent and in the ballpark cost-wise:
Fronts L&R = ELAC Debut 2.0 or Airmotiv AND STANDS Center = ELAC Debut or Airmotiv Rear L&R = something less costly Maybe used? it'll let them spend more on the Fronts (they're mainly for effect and can rarely be optimally placed) Sub (Amplified) = Goldenear ForceField series (I love mine, and for the money - it's REALLY well built) Receiver = Mid-level Marantz

For a first time buyer I think I'd suggest something simple not to scare them off, then see how much they actually use it or how much they like it. They can always go up to more if they figure out how much they really care about the hobby. I'd do something like the Def Tech Pro Cinema series. They are on major sale right now. Like the 2000 series at Crutchfield for $1270. That's speakers and sub. www.crutchfield.com/p_700PCIN2KB/Definitive-Technology-ProCinema-2000.htmlI'm sure many people here will disagree with me, but I also think people here are much more serious than the average Joe. But go out and look at reviews of theses speaker systems. You won't find hardly any bad reviews, and most are 4 and 5 stars. They simply sound terrific for most people.

In my living room I have a set of Mirage OmniSat speakers and an infinity 10" sub. Honestly it works great all running off of a fairly cheap Denon AVR. The only issue is the OmniSats are discontinued, but there are a ton of sets on ebay in the $500 dollar range. Sub wise I like the value in SVS subs. Maybe the PB-1000 for $500. AVR wise any Denon or Yamaha at the $500 will be fine. Just make sure it supports HDCP 2.2 so it can pass HDR info to a 4k TV. I would be careful with bookshelf speakers hanging on the walls especially high up. I just don't think they look very good, but that is my personal opinion. That does give an advantage to the E1 speakers since they are lower profile they look better on the wall than most bookshelf speakers. AVR: www.bestbuy.com/site/denon-560w-7-2-ch-with-heos-4k-ultra-hd-a-v-home-theater-receiver-black/5793000.p?skuId=5793000Also Bonzo is on the right track. The Def Tech is a fine system that is small and easy to install. Most people don't want speakers on stands for WAF so anything that wall mounts is a huge plus.

Also meant to say that for a newbie, Crutchfield is a great place to go because their customer service and help people are beyond reproach. You can have full confidence that they will make it right, and will be there for you for many years to come.
Also, don't just check out the 2000 series. The 800 and 600 series are very good theater speakers, and at these sale prices are almost a steal.

Good suggestions already but I would also look at Paradigm. You can do a set used and keep it well under $1k and have great sound for movies and music.
Speakers: Titans for the front and Atoms for the rear. Sub: Used HSU VTF15h sub for ~$500 (almost impossible to beat for its price point) AVR: Any of the big ones Denon, Yamaha, Marantz etc

They sound robust for small speakers...& inexpensive too.

Great point guys! 👍 Ive had Paradigm speakers for over 20 years and they are a great value and sound much better then their price range would indicate.

thank you so much for the suggestions! I found Orb Audio...what do you think? Very cool looking and well reviewed, but I've never heard them. Unfortunately speakers are mostly about personal taste. So recommendations from strangers will only get you so far. I personally wouldn't buy any speakers without a personal audition. Or at least without a good trial period so I could return them. Emotiva does 30 days. Crutchfield does 60.

thank you so much for the suggestions! I found Orb Audio...what do you think? I used to own orb audio and find them suitable for just a small room. If you go that route I suggest two of their subwoofers. I think they have a 30 day in home trial.

RSL was a SoCal 'boutique' brand several decades ago. I owned their Excellent copies of JBL 4311 / L100 speakers for a fraction the $$$. Fast forward to the ORIGINAL owner of the name and brand ReAcquiring same, and making a very high value HT setup. rslspeakers.com/cg3-overview/A well integrated setup I heard at a show 3 or so years ago. Very nice. BONZO is 100%. MUST HEAR prior to purchase. Stuff with 30 day return privilages gets a nod for that reason.
