Over the past couple of months I've grown to love jazz.. Basically started out with recommended lists of albums (Davis, Coltrane, Brubeck, Monk, Burrel, Collins, Baker, etc etc etc). I started out listening to mainly each of these artists most acclaimed works and kinda branched out to their other albums over the years.. With Tidal I try to discover new Jazz and every now and then find some really good stuff I like (today I've been listening to Jessica Lauren's Almeria) Kinda wanted to hear from long time Jazz lovers on what they like from today's Jazz musicians.. For instance.. I seem to prefer more of the classical sound vice the avant garde and fusion styles. I really like the California Cool genre. For instance if I really enjoy Dave Brubeck, John Coltrane, and Miles Davis.. Is there someone playing today that kinda compares, or plays a similar style? I was listening to Wynton Marsalis and really liked some of his albums... Great trumpet player. Also, I liked his brother's music ... Branford. Who are some other artists you think I'd enjoy? Just kinda want to explore. Example.. If you like Cannonball Adderley, you might like "X".. Thanks  |

Some others to try: Tom Scott, David Sanborn, Sonny Rollins, John McLaughlin, Larry Coryell, Grover Washington Jr and George Benson

I like Lindsey Webster for vocal Jazz. I'm partial to Sax, so I like Boney James and then Candy Dulfer, for a little funk. If you like Piano, can't beat Hiromi, although it's, I don't know the term, but I'll say "Avant Garde"

Express Awesome.. Will give sone of those a listen.. I'm familar with Sonny Rollins.. Ive listened to a couple of his albums. Sanborn and Washington, I know a little.. And have heard heard a tiny bit of their stuff over the decades. Probably the most popular tunes they're known for. |

I would suggest Joey Alexander. Check out the samples of his albums on Amazon. Theolonius Monk was one of those who had a big influence on him.
Also Pat Metheny (his style has changed over the years so if you listen to song samples, keep that in mind), Helen Sung, Billy Childs, Hiromi Uehara... so many great artists. I mentioned the last three because they aren't that well known but they are all excellent in their own ways.

A trumpet player I was listening to the other day was Bria Skonberg .. She can blow some horn, I will say that. I had no idea it was a female artist.. Came up on a playlist.. I really liked the sound and noticed the name.. So at least it wasn't a like based on looks. Lol.

I recommend watching viewing a few YouTube videos by some jazz fanatic collectors. Within their channels, they have videos with label based lists.
There are a few prolific YouTube channels you may find interesting.

I don't know if this was suggested but Jason Marsalis and Ellis Marsalis his brothers are pretty good. Also the BR library has a large collection of Wynton Marsalis if you are interested.

Creating a number of “stations” from these artists will yield many more you may like. Try Bob Berg, Yellowjackets. Bill |

Ahhh......the OP said his bag was more traditional/mainstream jazz. But Chick shaped my own passion for Jazz fusion going back to the mid 70’s. Stanley Clarke, Steve Gadd, Al Dimeola, Billy Cobham and more......! Bill |
