So the A/B class is the best? am i reading that right? No, you're not reading it right, exactly. Most manufacturers (including Emotiva) use a combination of Class A and AB. When power demand is low, the amp is in Class A mode to minimize distortion, but when demand increases, the amp automatically switches to class AB. However, MANY manufacturers are going to Class D, G, or H instead.

Thank you for the reply,
I have five L1's which are always left on A/B because of the heat left in just A. love the amps but they cost a small fortune to run all day every day including a XPA 5.
Just wondering whether the new EMO amps would be better suited to me? as long as they retain the same great sound of the L1's
Your thoughts?
Cheers
Ps i'm not very tec savvy

Hi Mick - Your questions are not trivial ones. The reason your components draw so much power at idle is that for the first few watts, they ARE running in Class A. After power demand increases, THEN they switch to Class AB, but at idle, they draw more current than otherwise. I'd recommend turning them off when not in use if idling power consumption is an issue. Yes, Class D, G, & H amps can draw less power at idle, but not always. Check with the manufacturer about idling power consumption before buying. As to how the new Emotiva amps sound compared to the earlier versions, it depends on whom you ask. I think that most would agree that the new amps sound differently than the older ones, but "better" or "worse" are very subjective. Depending on your speakers, you might conclude either (true of any other amp also). The best recommendation I could give you would be "listen for yourself." And also, don't neglect to hear the most excellent BasX series amplifiers - those are my current favorites! Boom

As for the gen 3 amps, I have heard them as well as the XPA-1 L in the same room. I would prefer your amp.
