Assuming your disk player has a good dac, your preamp/receiver has a good dac and both the disk player and preamp/receiver have good analog audio sections, which connection do you prefer, and why?

Shortest, most shielded Analog Path.

If you use an analog connection, then you are listening to the DAC of the player ONLY. Coax and optical are using the preamp/AVR DAC ONLY. So please keep this in mind.

If all else were equal (and it never is) I would pick the simplest connection of the three and that would be a coax cable if for no other reason it is just one cable and is easier than Toslink to connect.

I prefer Optical. No interference as it is light. You know kind of the same idea but not quite as fiber optic networks use. Copper is so yesterday.

Don't forget when using optical you now introduce two conversions from copper to light and then light to copper, boom I just blew your mind right there But seriously think about it

Agreed, just pick whichever one is the easiest to use. Assuming you purchase a quality cable that works as intended, you are not going to hear any difference between one or the other.

But I always go to the Internet to ask someone to tell me what sounds better. Especially for cables that have been around forever and discussed to death.

He must mean a CD player as a vinyl record requires no DAC.
Any other discs that I missed?

As the question was originally defined, with perfectly capable digital and analog modes in player and AVR or preamp, do what ever you want. The results will be the same. However, in real life, there are differences in the performance of DAC sections and analog sections of various components, making the selection of where to do what more exacting.

Digital or analog will completely depend on the DAC and how it's implemented. As far as type of digital cable I'd suggest listening and comparing as they can sound a little different, mostly depending on the components used.
My general preferences are in this order.
For digital connections, this will bring a signal to my preferred DAC
1. Digital AES/EBU Cable, with XLR connectors (preferred if available)
2. Digital Coax cable, with RCA connectors
3. Digital optical cable, with Toslink connectors (generally my least preferred and currently I am not using any in my system)
For analog connections, this will be used after the signal has become analog from my preferred DAC.
1. Analog balanced XLR connections (preferred if available)
2. Analog RCA connections

Thanks, that clears it up. Sort of vintage, like 8-tracks or cassettes, then? What is old is new again. When using optical or coax, does it let you use the bass and treble levels, I had problems with both a long time ago, that's why I just use analog....

I should have been more precise. I meant red book CD player.

Your digital connections will likely sound the same. The analog section would probably sound a bit different.

Yes, I just deleted multiple posts of the not-so-grown up variety. The next members post to go down that road will most definitely not be posting on a permanent basis.
