The PA-1 is an interesting item to me. I have DIY Gunn-modded Magnepan MMGs; as part of those mods, the crossovers are in 8-1/2" x 7-1/2" wooden boxes behind the panels, on which the feet of the PA-1s would sit perfectly (if they have the same placement as the feet of the DC-1). This would mean I'd have very short amp->speaker wires and only need XLR adapters from the PT-100, and more room in my stack. The low standby consumption and auto-on function would serve instead of triggers. The only issues are (a) sound quality and (b) power vs my current UPA-1s. Re power, the PA-1s are 270 watts at 0.1% THD vs 300 watts for the UPA-1s at 0.1% at 4 ohms, so power should not be a problem. Re sound quality and reliability, I'll wait for reports for a year or so; it they're good, a pair of vintage UPA-1s may then be up for sale.

Too bad you seem to have MISSED the bickering about Peter Gunn and his work over at Audio Asylum. And while I've heard 2 sets, some MMG and MG1.6 I've never seen inside the crossover enclosures. I KNOW they are not stock, PG having modified them to HIS ear. And than the claims of higher sensitivity begin. It got Ugly enough that PG was 'ejected'. Me? I suspect the all-wood framing does help. A lot. MDF is dense, unforgiving and ultimately inert. My design has NO metal except fasteners. Maggies are THE DIY speaker of choice. It's even possible to ditch the stock crossover for 'active' and be done.

Well, I'm familiar with the args over most of the last decade over the Gunn mods, but pretty sure I got value for the <$500 I put into the mods for parts, half of which was for the xovers (including 4-1/2"x 2" oil-filled caps and large foil inductors; Gunn provided the schematic)and most of the rest for the oak from Home Depot. Having a relative's full wood-working shop available and his expertise made the frame possible and helped saved me about $2K overall wrt what Gunn would have charged. Lots of fun, too. However, when these wear out I'll be looking for something smaller, maybe T1s; at 71, my ears are shifting the value curve.

I prefer the 1.7s which I also upgraded the crossover. But honestly I could happily live with either one.

The 1.7s as are ALL the .7 series uses a SERIES crossover. This has a few Plusses and a few Negatives. One negative for many Maggie fans is the LOSS of the ability to BiWire or BiAmp. The i (improved) version of the 1.7 and 3.7 are available and Magnepan, as usual, isn't really talking. The 1.7i and 3.7i are at a slight price premium and the response is mostly Positive. I think the MG12 has been replaced by the MG.7 I'm doing an EDIT to add drawing of a proposed Magnepan frame. Frame 'leans back' to weight the tripod style back support. Other features are not yet set in stone, such as a way to dampen the pole piece. Rounded front edge eases diffraction. Mounting of panel to base is using a ROUND bearing to simulate 'points'. * Attachments:

Hi guys, it's not totally clear what the fuss is about. I am not 100% Emotivan as my systems are mostly Peachtree but I have a lot of Emotiva gear, so I immediately ordered a set when it was released. As usual is this a bargain if you compare to Wyred4Sound and Nuprime, so for me it was an easy decision as I have the DC1 DAC already. I bought through a friend in the US as I am living in Singapore at the moment, so will have to wait until August before I am able to comment on the sound quality.

EMO uses an essentially UnModified ASC300 module. This means the amp should sound like all the other B&O amps out there. And that's not a bad thing. For 600$, the stereo pair? That's pretty much a no-brainer. Biamping my panels would have run 1200$ which is quite a deal. Too bad I've already played with 'D' amps and have moved on or THIS would probably have tipped me over the edge. Only even MINOR glitch is the need for balanced In cable. Or a TRS 1/4", which is what you'd find in a recording venue.

Why in the world would they concentrate their energy towards a 140 watt Class D amp? I mean Crown amps with three times the power sell for the same amount. Just another head scratcher from Emotiva. Had Emotiva introduced a 500 wpc Class D amp that you could at least use to power a sub if you didn't like the sound for your main set up could have at least justified buying one for many people.

Trouble is all the REST of the 'control' you need for a sub amp. Crossover and frequency adjust. Phase. Speaker inputs and L/R single ended. Speakon for the overachiever.
BTW, in an appropriate setting, 140 is PLENTY. Especially for the HT crowd where speaker sensitivity is usually pretty good and 'difficulty to drive' usually on the low side. A rack of 5 on UP of them would be quite the system. Sized right, low heat and do so much so well.

I generally agree, though my B&W’s sensitivity is only around 88 dB, I do think they benefit from the headroom the XPA-7 delivers (I pushed them over the weekend). As I’m about to play with Atmos though, I’d want to stack 11 or 13 and it just takes up too much space. I’d be willing to try a big multichannel D amp.

Has anybody got one of these amps yet?! I'm surprised these aren't flying off the shelves.

Add other speakers AND room gain. 8 watts continuous is 97db AND than add the other stuff. from 8 watts? 160 (20x) is another 13db headroom for 110 total for ONE speaker. REALLY need it louder? Will the speakers play louder than that without eventual problems? I'm thinking that B&O DOES make a single board, 7 channel amp. But not in the ASC line. Western Digital might, too, but since they were taken over by Infineon, I've lost track. I have one of their reference boards around here SOMEWHERE! The intent for the B&O amp is purely HT duties. If curious, you'll have to poke thru B&O documentation.

My take, is that if you gave 2 of these and a DC-1 to a college kid, this would make one hell of a dorm room stereo, for many reasons.
For me in my main room, not so much. YMMV.

Dorm System? From Parts Express:
DTA-1 amp currently about 30$ B652 Speakers? Also about 30$ per
Total <100$ for a 'dorm' system. Use your phone as a source. Or even a cable from the confuser.
Stuff sent to college should be considered Disposible. NO, not the kid!

My Dad died the Spring of my freshman year, and when I went to our new Tennessee home for the summer (where I didn't know anyone and couldn't hang with old friends) my Mom did things to try and help ease the pain of it all. One of those things was to buy me a stereo system. And being 19, of course I took full advantage. The 2nd best Sony receiver, the best Sony dual tape deck, and the best Sony 5 disc changer. And then from Crutchfield got the best speakers they sold, Bose 10.2s. All told it was like $2500. I hauled it all up to MSU for many years. Still have it all actually.
