My SuperCube 1 has served me well but it was time to start looking for a new sub. I have been doing a lot of research and bit the bullet and bought the SVS PB 16 Ultra. They delivered it yesterday and I love it but it is huge! Now comes the fun part of tweaking it and setting it up. My wife and I were looking at the layout last night and she said it looks plain on the left side. I told her that adding another PB 16 Ultra to the left side would balance it out and look better. The look on her face said it all, so for now, just one PB 16.

Because of your layout and room size, you would be better served with a SB16. Smaller footprint, lower in room extension, and can be placed further back. Just stay with me a minute. You could make the suggestion to your wife that you are looking at something smaller and order the SB16 to try it out (you do get 45 days). You now have 2 subs in the room . Following that same logic, you could make an argument for not just the aesthetic appeal but the fact of how much better the bass sounds and thus can TURN IT DOWN (key phrase when talking HT to women) as 2 don't have to work as hard as one sub. If that doesn't work, you could always order the SB16 and tell her "it just fell off the truck" and you have no one to return it to; but that might lead to many nights of sleeping on the couch...alone. But seriously, 2 subs don't have to work as hard as one and a sealed solution for your room size and layout would suit you better; even if you stayed with one sub. Just my 2 cents.

The room is 17'X 21' with an 8'ceiling. The picture was taken from the first row, there is still 12' behind the first row. The store I purchased this from has a room that has both subs, SB16 and PB16 in the room and the room is about the same dimensions as my room +/- 1 foot. To me, the PB16 just sounded better and I brought in a specific blu-ray and had them demo a scene using both subs individually. Both sounded great, but to me, the PB16 just sounded better.

Yes, there is a lot of bass in the room. I am still not sure where to keep my speaker setting, still working that out. With the Supercube 1's, I had my LCR set to large, now they are all set to small. I still go back and fourth with that setting. SVS recommended keeping the LCR at small. I will just continue to tweak it and see. When I was playing some test scenes from the movie Act of Valor, our Yorkie, Lilly, walked in front of the sub and when the sub started to hit, the air from the 2 open ports rushed out, blew her fur and she took of really quick out of the room.

Nice system and room ... but I’m feeling lopsided just looking at it. Start walking around with your head tilted until your wife asks what’s up? I like goozoo ’s idea, and being that the SB16 is $500 cheaper and they give you a $200 discount for buying two ... it’s like they went on sale! Yeah, tell her that, women love sales! (maybe they’ll come with a pair of shoes 👠)

Just to help out a bit, the reason SVS is telling you to set the speakers to small is because of the frequency response of your mains which drop off at 33Hz. This means what when set to large, ALL frequencies from 0-20KHz are being sent to the mains but they can only reproduce down to 33Hz. When set to small with a 40Hz-60Hz crossover, then you can hear and feel the information you are currently missing via your new sub. The LFE channel has its' own output being sent only to the sub channel. The limitation of a ported sub is that it drops off (like a cliff) at the tuning frequency of the port. While a sealed sub will be rated to not go as low, the in-room response will usually extend down further than a ported model. For example, my SB16 extends down to 10dB at 92dBFS, whereas my ported SVS only went down to 14Hz. If you think about it, you really have three subs in your setup which need to be tuned properly. With the mains having separate RCA inputs, I would actually try the following. Place the sub in the back of the room close to the back wall with the driving facing sideways and take measurements with REW to determine where gives you the smoothest response. Pick up a miniDSP and run your LFE as well as your mains/ center into it then out to your speakers and subs. Put a crossover into the front subs at say 40Hz and a high pass filter at say 70Hz. Set your levels and finally use Multi Sub Optimizer software (free download at AVS forum) to set gains, delays, and EQ for the three subs. Be sure to set the mixer on the DSP to route all subs signals to both your mains and SVS. By doing all this, you will have the mains acting as subs in conjunction with your SVS, but properly integrated using MSO software to produce some of the cleanest and most accurate bass you will ever hear. You also will not require another sub, as the front subs will act as mid-bass modules, while the rear will dig deep into the infra-sonic range. Win win for both your wife and yourself. In the end, it's all about tuning and not just the piece of hardware you got. Best of luck. In addition to position
