I've heard a couple of cuts from the new Coltrane release over the past couple of,days.. One of the unnamed (numbered cuts) and one called Slow Blues (on XM radio). Really good stuff. I'm looking forward to the release tomorrow.. Hoping it's on Tidal asap.. Or I may buy the CD or download.
Anyone else looking forward to hearing it? Haven't seen much about it here.

Two versions on Tidal.. Masters (MQA) and standard lossless (hi-fi) I listened this morning.. Good stuff. I enjoyed the chance to listen straight through (although I didn't listen to part2 which are the various takes of previous songs). There sure is a ton of excitement over the release. Attachments:

It's a little brick-walled. Must have been a label executive in the mastering suite exerting pressure.

Reminded me I have had it in my Amazon cart a while, placed the order today.
Really hate the loudness war. Matt's video does an excellent job of explaining it. That is IME/IMO the main reason vinyl is preferred over CD so much of the time -- nothing to do with the technology, all about the mastering.

Good question, since this is a new release of previously unpublished works. I do not know; depends on how they mastered the LP. Most LPs have some compression from the original tape to meet the requirements of the medium (vinyl). I was speaking in general where older LPs have more dynamic range than new CDs remastered from the same source. A number CDs have measurably less dynamic range than the tape or the old LP releases despite the greater dynamic range capability of CDs. There are many, many articles in print and on the 'net about this. "Louder is better" pushed over years (decades) to increase sales without regard to what it does to the music.

I figured the final masterings of this recording would be inserted in all the mediums the same way.. But I may be wrong..
As for me.. I didn't really notice.

No, they really can't be, as the requirements are quite different for LPs (vinyl, records, whatever) compared to CDs (tape, etc.) Actually, semantics may come to play, because at least IME (very old) the final master is adjusted "on the fly" by the engineer riding the lathe to stamp the LP master. And there is the RIAA curve to deal with, etc. so the final version on the album does not usually match the final tape. If nothing else a little compression, EQ, and low-cut filter is applied. What is very frustrating is, while I have a good TT, it is not set up, and I have LPs and CDs that are supposedly the same remaster from the same company that sound (and measure) very obviously different.
