Good Afternoon.
I connected the new XMC-1 to Oppo 103 and testing out some SACDs.
For those who have played SACDs through the XMC-1, I have a question. What does your XMC-1 display show for audio? I was expecting DSD but it shows PCM 5.1. This may be accurate but wanted to confirm.
Connection between XMC-1 and Oppo 103 is via HDMI. Oppo DMI audio is set for Bitstream output to the XMC-1. For the SACD audio output setting on the Oppo I tried DSD but this resulted in no audio. I had to set this to "auto". This leads me to beleve that the XMC-1 is not processing DSD and the reason why PCM 5.1 is beig displayed.
Thoughts?

Thans for the reply Geebo. I left the listening mode on the XMC-1 in Auto.

Thans for the reply Geebo. I left the listening mode on the XMC-1 in Auto. Try Stereo or Surround depending if you have a 2 or 5.1 channel SACD.

From Oppo 103 manual: DSD Auto (default) – The player checks with the device connected to the HDMI output to automatically determine which audio format (DSD or PCM) to use for SACD playback. – SACD Direct Stream Digital (DSD) data is output over HDMI without any conversion. For the analog audio outputs, DSD data is converted into an analog signal directly by the internal DAC. If you use a receiver that supports HDMI v1.2a with DSD over HDMI, or you prefer the sound quality of straight DSD to analog, please select this option. NOTE Due to the hardware limitation, DSD output is only available from the HDMI 2 OUT port. To listen to SACD using the HDMI 1 OUT port, please set SACD Output to PCM.
While I am not using XMC-1 but USP-1, I have Oppo HDMI set to "AUTO" which works for me - a note of caution; set your XMC volume control low, as I believe the Oppo will send DSD at FULL Volume, IIRC

I believe this may be the issue. I typically use the split video setting with audio on HDMI 2 but need to replace one of the cables .The cable is probably on HDMI 1. I will give this a try tomorrow and report back the outcome. Thanks for all of the replies.

^^^ Probably it. I got lucky and remembered to swap outputs when I installed the new board otherwise this would have been my thread...

NOTE Due to the hardware limitation, DSD output is only available from the HDMI 2 OUT port. To listen to SACD using the HDMI 1 OUT port, please set SACD Output to PCM. Help me out here, I'm confused, what difference does it make to the audio output which HDMI video output is used? The sound output (from the XMC-1) is analogue to the power amp. Is it that the sound should be OK, but the display (on the panel) isn't? Cheers Gary

I'm not sure, but I believe it has to do with the audio signal being limited by bandwidth over HDMI -1. Apparently the restriction is not present over HDMI -2? As you can probably tell, I too am somewhat confused 😕

Which is logical since #2 is the one most people use for the audio (when #1 goes direct to the TV for video). Normally anything #1 is the prime but not in the case of DSD, where #2 is the go to output. I need to check the Sony X800 manual to see if they use the same logic (ie; DSD = #2) Update; checked the Sony manual and it reads as if both HDMI outputs are DSD capable (of course output #2 is audio only). Cheers Gary

Its to do with the QDEO video chip Gary ; when Oppo sensibly later went back to the SI solution for the darbee edition it was reversed

Thanks Gaglione
Connecting to Oppo HDI 2 worked. DSD output is now displayed on the XMC-1.
