I've been looking for some test files to test 7.1 and to aid in expanding my knowledge since I just added the Back Surround channels to my system. Youtube is no help if it can only do 5.1. Dolby's web site looked promising so I downloaded some Atmos 7.1.2 and 7.1.4 demos. These MP4 files only play as 5.1, even after lots of head-bashing and insane behavior (doing the same thing, expecting different . . . ). I was fully expecting the Atmos files (the only 7.1 channels or more available to download) to decode just like the latest Atmos movies I've purchased which play as Dolby TrueHD 7.1 and show up as-such on the XMC-1 display. Am I missing something? Does the XMC-1 misinterpret these files? I downloaded the files from www.dolby.com/us/en/guide/test-tones.html onto a USB stick, then played the files in 3 different Blu-ray players, Sony UBP-X700, LG UP-875, OPPO BDP-105, all of which gave the same result. I also played the files from the HDMI port of my computer, no difference, still 5.1. There is a white noise test with a graphic showing which speaker is supposed to be active, yet I'm not getting any sound from the two Back Surround speakers. Since adding the Back Surrounds, the movies that the XMC-1 shows as being Dolby TrueHD 7.1, like Blade Runner Final Cut and Saving Private Ryan, sound truly amazing!

I wouldn't blame the XMC1 ttocs ; I noticed the mp4 used the EAC3 codec according to mediainfo scanning below ; so odds are good the thumbdrive contents gets downmixed to dd5.1 by the players . Its not lossless truehd ; but lossy dd + instead

the XMC-1 handles 7.1 audio perfectly. You might find it easier to pick up a BluRay with 7.1 audio and play that.

So to quote Rob Petrie, when he was in court suing the guy that sold him pillows made with "cheap, chopped, chicken feathers", I am guilty of "Malicious accusary!". Good to know, thanks. But I'm still on the hunt for some files to play with.

I have movies that are 7.1, but I'm specifically looking for content like what Dolby has that graphically shows the speaker playing, and only that speaker, so I know it's not down/up mixed or shared content for the surrounds. On these files I made reference to, white noise will come from one of my speakers which may or may not match the graphical display on the video. A: It's a learning experience on how regular surround is handled, as well as Atmos. B: It's a system check to verify that things are working as I expect, or learn why they don't. Do you know a source for 7.1 discs? Because I haven't seen much except 5.1.

Have you tried plugging the USB stick into your Oppo, and streaming it from there?

Remember - the XMC-1 doesn't "do" Atmos.

Remember - the XMC-1 doesn't "do" Atmos. Thanks. Yes, I do realize this. But, Dolby only has Atmos versions of demo files available. And the Atmos movies I have all down-mix to Dolby TrueHD 7.1, so I figured these demo files would do the same.

Have you tried letting the oppo decode the audio and send it pcm to the xmc ?? For curiosity sake. Ok, so I tried the following using the Dolby Test Tones 7.1.2, all with the same results: OPPO BDP-105: LPCM = PCM5.1, AUTO or Bitstream = Dolby Plus 5.1 Sony UBP-X700: PCM = PCM5.1, AUTO = Dolby Plus 5.1 Then I tried some VUDU movie trailers streamed through the Sony UBP-X700 PCM = PCM5.1, AUTO = Dolby Plus 5.1 Then I tried some Apple movie trailers streamed through the Apple TV 4K Apple TV 4K: Set to best audio = PCM5.1 I also found that Netflix 4k UHD only has 5.1 audio. The only actual 7.1 that the XMC-1 sees as the incoming audio signal is while watching any of the latest Blu-ray UHD/HDR 4K Atmos (some are also DV) movies I purchased this year. It's only when streaming, including from the USB stick or directly from a Mac using HDMI to XMC-1, that the issue of 5.1 being the most amount of channels occurs. Now I'm understanding that 7.1 is just not yet available from streaming services. Ok, I get it. My discs do the 7.1 so I'm happy with that. Also I read that Atmos on some services will be running later in the year, so maybe it'll downmix to 7.1 like my Blu-rays do?? So, getting back to the Dolby 7.1.2 demo files, I am not understanding why they won't downmix to 7.1, but instead play as 5.1. Is it that they are coming from an MP4 movie? Is something lost in the download? Hmmmmm, questions, questions.

I’m not sure why you’re only getting 5.1
I downloaded the leaf and amaze demo and they both play as atmos through my odroid c2 and anthem mrx 1120.

I don't know if this is relevant but I'l throw it in.
Dolby allows for Atmos at 7.1 (Dolby True HD) with the metadata for the objects above it. They also allow Atmos for streaming at 5.1 (Dolby Digital) with the metadata for the objects above that. This reduces the bandwidth required for streaming Atmos. Maybe the versions you are downloading, although marked as 7.1.4, are really based on 5.1 because of bandwidth limitations.
Cheers Gary

I figured out part of this issue.
From what I've been able to search, MP4 can only contain 5.1. I think it's incredible, if accurate, that Dolby would have files for download as MP4 but say they will demo 7.1.2, 7.1.4, etc. if MP4 cannot play anything more than 5.1. edit: I think Gary's explanation is correct on this and is why the files only show as being 5.1.
I downloaded MKV versions of the same demos, Leaf, Amaze, and played them on the OPPO BDP-105 in perfect Dolby TrueHD 7.1 !
Thank you emofrmcgy. When you said you were getting Atmos, that lead me to think maybe the files I got were not what they were supposed to be. I inspected the files with Mac and PC and both operating systems reported them to only have 6 channels. Then I looked for different versions and found downloadables listed as Atmos and TrueHD 7.1. These happened to be MKV files. I downloaded the 7.1 versions and bingo!
Gary, I think you're on to something with your explanation. Maybe if I had a Atmos capable device those MP4 files might actually work as you describe. This is very interesting indeed.
Thank you all for your help! Now I know what a MKV file is, sort of, and that the OPPO can play them.
I would still like to get a 7.1 version of the Dolby Test Tones. I'll keep searching.
edit: it was really late when I wrote this post, noticed a couple things.

VUDU has a handful of movies that stream in DD+7.1.
Prometheus is the one I can find at a quick glance.
If you wanted to test that, anyway.
EDIT: You'd probably get the same, as the Atmos trailers they offer are also shown to be true DD+ 7.1.
EDIT 2: The VUDU streaming issue could be your player's VUDU software. VUDU also offers UHD, but not on the VUDU app built in to my Sony UHD TV.

E2: Interesting, because I was using the VUDU app on the Sony X700. I'll try a different one just for kicks, thanks.

All the trailers are 5.1, or 2.0. They're in SD, too. But if you buy/rent you get the full quality.
Login to the VUDU website, go to a movie, scroll down to the very bottom and it shows you what the audio will be based on what version you buy/rent (SD/HDX/UHD).
The X700 is on their list (https://forum.vudu.com/forum/vudu/general-discussion/49928-vudu-uhd-compatible-devices-list), but it is marked as "newly added", so did you make sure the player is fully updated?
