I've been aware of Dream Theater for many years, but I have never heard any of their music. Can some fans suggest which album I should buy to start learning if they are my cup of tea? I want to learn, school me!

I believe Porscheguy is a huge fan. He might be able to point you in the right direction.

Not sure how you'll find them but I've always enjoyed their talent musically but many of their songs get a bit sound-sameish to me.
Portnoy has done some killer work with Liquid Tension Experiment with Tony Levin and John Petrucci.

Images and Words is a good album. I really like it but their music is a bid different. Listen to it several times and it may grow on you.

I want to learn, school me! We played a gig with them during their Images and Words tour. All very nice people. They even watched our set from side-stage. Had a great time. It’s good to see they’re still out there.

I have been following this band from the beginning and have almost all of their CD's. Like all bands I like some CD's more than others. Their first CD "Images and Words" 1992 is very good and contains their only mainstream commercial hit "Pull Me Under". I also like think that "Scenes From a Memory" 1999 and "Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence" 2002 are very good. Inner Turbulence is a two CD set and the CD that starts with "Overture" is fantastic with all the songs segueing into each other. "A Dramatic Turn of Events" 2011 is darn good too and "Train of Thought" 2003 and Systematic Chaos" 2007 are very well played but more on the heavy side. Their new album "The Astonishing" is pretty astonishing . Like all Dream Theater albums the musicianship is amazing. The guitar player John Petrucci is considered a god in the guitar player's lexicon. That should get you going! A few favs...The solos in Glass Moon and Erotomania are pretty crazy..

I love Dream Theater and have been a fan since their debut album. Fantastic musicianship. Give Black Clouds and Silver Linings a listen. If you like anything from them, you will probably like everything from them.

All good tracks, how did I miss this band for so long? Ha. Thank you for the information! They remind me a bit of technical metalcore...

I enjoy Dream Theater but after the release of Black Clouds & Silver Linings I've kind of lost interest. This is my listing for their albums in order if I had to rank them from my collection.
Images and Words When Dream and Day Unite Awake Train of Thought Black Clouds & Silver Linings Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory A Change of Seasons EP Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence Systematic Chaos Octavarium Falling into Infinity

I have all their albums, and think that "Scenes from a Memory" would be a good place to start. It's a really solid mix of heavy, progressive, melodic. Need to listen a few times though, it is a concept album.
Next I'd go for Black Clouds and Silver Linings, and if you can get the bonus CD version it has some amazing covers of Queen, Rainbow, King Crimson and more.
The Astonishing is a 2 CD concept that also excellent in my opinion.
Take a look at Dream Theater Live at Budokan too, as well as their other live blu-rays. Seriously impressive band live. I can confirm that from personal experience too.
Once you get hooked, you will seek out the rest of their catalogue as they are all great in their own way, but also quite varied musically.
Enjoy

That is an incredible price for 10 albums. Nice find.
