Hi everyone,
Here's my home theater story thus far:
I've always had a soft spot for American made direct-to-consumer audio companies. While I was still in college I bought a pair of Ascend Acoustics CBM-170s and ran a 2.0 system with a mid-level Marantz receiver. Over the years I would occasionally buy a couple more Ascend speakers and I've slowly built up to my current 7.1 system, which is listed in my profile. 18 months ago I decided that when I made the switch from 1080p to 4K I was going to go with separates instead of a receiver. At that time I still had a 5.1 system, and I didn't want to buy a processor and amp all at once, so I decided to buy an amp first (my Marantz receiver had pre-outs), and so I bought an Emotiva A-500.
A couple of months later I bought a used XMC-1 for a good price that had the v1 video board (still under warranty). At the time my main TV was still 1080p. About 9 months ago I upgraded to a 4K TV, and so the XMC-1 went in the closet while I waited for the new video board. I installed the new board 10 days ago and now the XMC-1 is back in business in my living room. I also just bought an XPA-7 Gen 3 during the sale, and it shipped today. Eagerly awaiting its arrival.
My plan is to keep the A-500 in the closet until the XMC-1 Atmos upgrade comes out, and then that amp will be used for the 4 Atmos speakers. I'm not in any rush to upgrade to Atmos right now. 4K + 7.1 is fine for me for the time being.
I'm happy to report that the new video board has been working great (mostly). I've had to do a hard restart on the unit a couple of times, but nothing super frustrating. I'm sure the kinks in the firmware will get worked out in the coming weeks. HTPC, PS4 Pro, and Xbox One X all work fine with 4K + HDR.
Anyway, I'm happy to be an Emotiva owner. It's definitely the highest quality gear I've ever owned.
