Here is a brief article on a Rotary Subwoofer. This is a MONSTER of bass while not being of such monsterous size. These can even be DIY'd. Also? Pretty flat response to Near Zero. Certainly 10hz shouldn't be a problem. www.eminent-tech.com/randd2.htmlDone properly you can really pressurize a room.

The Thigpen has been around for quite a while. A great DIY project but requires a particular place (and perhaps a touch of insanity) to build. Here is the main site for the woofer: www.rotarywoofer.com/Done properly you can explode a room.

Some of the samples I saw on videos looked like they were built into a DOOR.
And the entire thing was vibrating. ANY loose ANYTHING will shake and either break or cause other structural damage.
But IF you are a committed 'Bass Head' what else will do? Flat response to 5hz is entirely doable. As if this existed in even the most optimistic movie soundtrack.

TRW-17 "THE WORLDS FIRST TRUE SUBWOOFER"
Total $21,950-$25,950 "Want to hear what 5Hz sounds like? A new woofer technology unlike any other and a new product category for home audio. This is the first home audio woofer delivering true response to DC. The Thigpen Rotary Woofer is the worlds first true infrasonic home audio or home theater woofer. Conventional subwoofers roll off rapidly below 20Hz. With no cone the rotary woofer achieves high efficiency at very low frequencies. Most subwoofers have a difficult time producing acoustic output below 20Hz at audible levels. They generally require large amounts of equalization, distortion rises rapidly, and even the most expensive available cannot produce significant output below 10Hz. Subwoofer electronics usually contain a cutoff filter which sharply rolls off content to the subwoofer below 20Hz to protect the speaker. On the other hand, the rotary woofer has enough acoustic output to move an open door back and forth 0.5" between 1 and 5Hz! It has enough output to find resonance frequencies of walls and ceilings in a room. It requires no equalization to achieve flat response to below 1Hz..."
Really? C'mon man!

I've looked at a bunch of drawings of both the Eminence product and some DIY. The problem is the Swash Plate and all the ball linkages. That's a lot of mass to 'wiggle' in time to the voice coil. And as stuff Inevitably Wears, other problems will rear up.
One of these is probably the ONLY sound transducer available to regular people which would give a realistic presentation of a Saturn V launch or being on a Battleship when a 16" Naval Rifle let loose.
I'll reserve judgement on Musicality until I hear one. Maybe some pipe organ? Even Orchestral with tympani? Or some rock with a good Bass line.
I think that it works AT ALL is pretty neat.

I'm guessing DY didn't like it! Oh Well! somebody may eventually get it right AND Musical. Right now? From 20hz to DC and for about 3 or 4 different movies. I'll bet Jurassic Park would be terrific with this 'device'.

When I heard it in 2006 I thought it sounded like ass. You mean flatulence? No I just mean it was horrible. It pressurized the room, yes, it created a feeling of low frequency energy, yes. Did it "sound" like tones? Like music? Like sound effects? No, it sounded like being under a helicopter blade, or like a big sweaty ass would if you pressed your face between the puffy, wet cheeks far enough to pressurize your ears.

Just ONE minor thing to add. Not much 'musical' happens below the lowest note on the Piano. Sure, some pipe organ and the pedal notes will go down to as low as 16hz, but that's IT. Besides, the only animal I KNOW can hear that low would either be an Elephant or some species of Whale. As far as people go? Read what DY said about pressurization and 'feeling' of LF. Just like an effects movie, few (nobody, actually) knows what that stuff is supposed to sound like.
I'd like to hear one of these things try to reproduce what a good speaker would. MUSIC. I have a feeling that between mechanical latency (it's slow) and all those mechanical parts, you won't get a lot of MUSIC out of it.
But If I was working at a Theme Park and working on 'The Earthquake Ride' a couple of these things would more than pay for themselves.
