Hi all!
Hope someone can help me with this problem.
I have a Emotiva XPA-3 Gen1. I use it together with a Marantz SR 7010.
I have tried using both mono and stereo 1/8 (3.5mm) trigger cables.
This is what happens:
- I turn on the Marantz receiver
- The Emotiva amp turns on right away
- While the Marantz is still going trough it’s startup sequence the Emotiva powers down again
What I see on the Emotiva amp is that the red LEDs starting to flash, then they all turn solid blue for a second before it turns of. I have measured the trigger cable voltage, and it 12V continuously.
To me it seems like it’s missing signals from the pre-outs on the Marantz and therefor shuts down. It’s strange though. Cause on my sub it takes several minutes before it powers down because of lack of an input signal. It the Emotiva expecting an input signal from the second it’s powered on?
If I let the Marantz start up fully, and then power on the Emotiva it remains on. I have also tried using a 12V power supply as a trigger. Same behaviour.
Any ideas?
Regards
Jorn, Norway

Update: I have done a little more checking. I removed all 3 signal cables going from the Marantz to the Emotiva. Then started up again. The Emotiva triggered on and stayed on. I don't get it. I then inserted one signal cable at the time. With one plugged in everything works as supposed. With 2 or more plugged in it acts up again and powers down. I measured the voltage between signal ground on the Marantz and signal ground on the Emotiva with all cables unplugged. I measure around 3VAC on all 3 channels, and some mv DC. Is that normal?

Regards Jorn, Norway I have similar issue with my Denon. If I'm playing XBOX, the amps turn off. A few times it turned off then turned on during game play. Not sure its an Emotive thing or the Denon Trigger!!

Does it work if you turn the amp on manually without the trigger?

Looks like protection mode getting triggered on the amp. Is the SR7010 putting out something nasty to the signal cables? If you leave the amp fully on during power up of the SR7010, do you hear any pops or other noises?

Does it work if you turn the amp on manually without the trigger? Thanks for the replies guys! Yes, it works if I wait till the Marantz has finished its start-up sequence. So I thought about adding a delay to the trigger signal. Looks like protection mode getting triggered on the amp. Is the SR7010 putting out something nasty to the signal cables? If you leave the amp fully on during power up of the SR7010, do you hear any pops or other noises? Yes, it does look like some protection mode. Especially with the leds blinking frantically yellow. I'll try measuring the signal cables from the Marantz at start-up and see if there's too high DC coming from them. As I mentioned I tried removing the signal cables, and it worked like a charm. I start to suspect that the Emotiva is working fine and that this behaviour is caused by the Marantz. See video:

The delay might work if it is enough to start the amp after whatever signal is freaking it out.

Too many devices connected to the one trigger output.
I have mine set up daisy chain, the XMC-1 triggers the XPA-5 and the XSP-1. The XSP-1 triggers the XPA100, which triggers the FR XPA-1L, which in turn triggers the FL XPA1-1L. So that one trigger doesn’t turn on more than 2 devices.
This also has the advantage of not overloading the circuits by turning on everything at once.
Cheers Gary

Thanks for all the inputs! Much appreciated! I have found the culprint. It was the right channel signal cable of all things. Replaced it and everything works as a charm!
Cheers! Jorn
