I was looking around and found an excellent deal on an xpa5 gen1. I was wondering if it would play nice with my xpa1 gen2 pair. Or would the higher gain structure make it difficult? The xpa5 would be powering center and the rear surrounds.

I use 2 XPA-1 Gen 2 units for my front towers and a Gen 1 XPA-5 to power other speakers in the system, and I have not experienced any problems whatsoever... I imagine one takes care of any such problems at the speaker configuration phase and how one calibrates level settings with one's processor... I did not experience any problems related to the different gain settings on the amps during my speaker/levels calibrations and the XMC-1 syncs things up and controls all the amps/speakers perfectly.

sahmen: Will be duplicating your setup in late October at my winter place with XMC-1, two XPA-1 gen 2s and an XPA-5 gen 2. The Xpa-1s will feed two Tekton Double Impacts and the XPA-5 will supply surround power to an Emotiva C1 center and two T1 rears (going to be gobs of volume available). Have a Hsu 15" sub available but not sure I will need it. Would benefit from your experience. Here is what I am thinking. Want to run all music as stereo feeds to the XPA-1s and main speakers (no sub) with the XMC-1 Reference option. The feed will be from JRiver as decoded by a RME ADI-2 DAC going into the XMC-1 balanced inputs. Am assuming that the volume can be controlled by the XMC-1 and the overall loss in running the architecture this way will be minimal (just the volume control, right?). This 2 channel setup will be tuned with REW -- am doing this in my summer place and it works perfectly importing a convolution file from REW to JRiver. Then, for surround feeds, will use the XMC-1 with an Oppo feed to the XPA-1s and XPA-5 powering all 5 speakers plus sub. This will be tuned with Dirac. So, first, have you tuned your setup with the XMC-1 version of Dirac? Did it work with the 2 amp types? And, second, do you switch back and forth for stereo and surround options using either the Direct or Reference modes with the XMC-1? Have you found one or the other preferable? Thanks.

The gain is not different enough that an AVR won't handle it. Smaller surrounds and center tend to be a little less sensitive than mains anyway, but even if that is not true in your case a few dB should not be a problem for the AVR/processor.

gen 1 gain is 32db gen 2 gain is 29 db The AVR Should be able to set levels
