I got in on the mailing link to buy a UDP-205 for the "last batch" after the farewell announcement and as soon as I got the link the other day I ordered it.
Now I'm reading by some that the audio quality on this device is not up to par? Is this correct? I know several who had the 105 and the 95 and they love them. I just figured the 105 was on part and/or would of been better.
Also, understand that I'm currently using a Sony black friday $50 special so this would in most aspects be considered a hefty upgrade.

Depends on what kind of expectations you have. Allot are still paying allot for a 205 if they can find one. It is curious that it would be worse than the 105. I don't see that but I never heard the 205 either. So I can't say. But if Oppo's track record is any indication, I think you should be good. Are you better off with a much better DAC instead? Maybe.

It's just that the 200 series has Sabre DACs and those have many detractors as well as fans. The chips have multi channels and the more you use in parallel per channel, the better they sound. These chips in the 205 are approved for MQA.

I like the sound. Some folks feel that the sound is is too "thin and metallic". They don't like the DAC. I own the 203 which is perfectly acceptable to me and I've heard the 95,105, and 205 and I personally don't have any problems with the sound.
But we all hear differently and I'm not going to demean anyone who doesn't care for it's sound character.

Ya I was lucky to get on the mailing list. I paid msrp and will be here Tuesday Pretty sad people are turning around and selling them. I don’t want to ever sell mine. I wanted to use it for an audio player song since im about 25% music

Things like tubes which can add artificial warmth sound great but the argument is not really accurate.

Seems to largly be about preference. Boomzilla loved his 105, but thinks his 205 sounds terrible. I have the 105 and I think it sounds hollow. My Denon sounds much nicer on my system. YMMV.

I too think the Oppo 205 has some audible issues. Thin, weak in dynamics, some glare in the treble. Interestingly Audio Science Review measured it and it has got incredibly good measurements - the best ever measured. Which told me a lot about the value of measurements. Also it doesn't have apps! No youtube. No Pandora, no netflix. I wouldn't buy it at any price

The Oppo 205 (and the 95 and 105) use various version numbers of the Sabre DAC; it's one of the "audiophile upgrades" on the "5" designation models. Sabre DACs measure extremely well, and very flat, but their sound is often subjectively described as "extremely detailed" or "etched" - depending on how much you like it. Either way, subjectively, they do not sound quite neutral.
Most people these days have a smart TV with apps on it, or have a Roku, Apple TV, or other device that's full of apps - so, for them, having apps on the Blu-Ray player can be redundant.

My old Blu ray player would output a native 24 fps signal. For some people like me this fps difference is noticeable.

The thing about the 5/05’s is that you’re buying a player and an upgraded DAC, so like any other reputable DAC, it’s sound is a hot topic and will have proponents and opponents (makes sense since you’re paying a premium for it). You can always compare it to the DAC in your XMC-1 and decide if it was worth the extra cost. Either way you have one of the best players around for every kind of disk, and a well built player that should last a very long time — the HDMI input’s a cool feature and tool for analyzing video signals as well.

Personally I haven't ever liked the sound from 95, 105 or 205's, whereas the 93, 103 and 203's always sounded more "realistic" to me. IMHO, for people who really liked the 95/105 Oppo gave them more in the 205. For people who tolerated the 95/105 the 205 was possibly a step too far. For those that disliked the 95/105 the 205 was intolerable. Disclaimer, in general I'm not a fan of Sabre DAC's but in the Yamaha CX-A5100 processor their implementation is more than acceptable (to me). As KeithL often points out it is the implementation that makes the difference, not just what brand of DAC it is. Cheers Gary

I own an Oppo 105 and I think its sound is fine for movies, but not for 2-channel. I hear others disliking the 205 who had liked the 105. Suprising...but no wonder they are discontinuing their processors.

I wasn't into how they voiced the 105 for 2 channel listening. It sounded hard to my ears but I like tubes so DACs I love will likely come across soft and dull to many.

Use the USB DAC with analog out in conjunction with Roon. Super glad I got one this way as I would never pay the stupid eBay prices that are around these days on the 205. Not sure why people are still complaining about the apps that aren't offered in the 205. The only one I found that worked well in the 105 was the YouTube app. I personally like the fact it isn't stuffed with bloatware that can be found in any other streaming box. Jason
