Hi Emo Folks, Just curious which speaker driver material have you owned/tried, which did you prefer? Also if you can comment as to why or why not. Thanks

I am a big Paper fan initally, but like all else. What is your goal? So much more involved in the speaker than just cone composition. Granted it is important, but again all elements have to be taken into account. As an example the Emotiva T2 is my favorite speaker in forever because it is the synergy of all elements of its design and voicing done well. It does not use paper cones, but still what it does use and do are amazing. I am using this speaker as an example to how contrarian my driver composition is not a factor when all the parts of the speaker are in place.
I like ribbons, composites, domes, and so on. I think it is a toolbox as to how, what, and where, and why you the components for that most satisfying speaker you call yours. Just my 2 cents.

It was more out of curiosity as I too am a big fan of paper and Mylar. Be sure to select yours on the survey. Thanks

Thanks for sharing I've never heard of it before. What do you like about it? From Focal. THE UNIQUE QUALITIES OF FLAX F cones are made of high-quality flax fibers core enclosed by two thin layers of glass fiber. They satisfy the key criteria of a high performance diaphragm : high internal damping, high velocity of sound and high flexural rigidity. Rigidity All these criteria cannot be met by a mono-material cone. Sandwich technology greatly influences the neutrality of the sound produced by the cone, something, which has always been Focal’s hallmark. The expertise gained from the sandwich technology of the Utopia and K2 Power ranges enabled Focal to develop a revolutionary flax-fiber cone conciliating the 3 criteria. Lightness Flax is twice as light as fiberglass, because the fiber is hollow. It also has very low elasticity which makes it ideal to increase the flexural rigidity of a sandwich structure. Moreover, it can be obtained in non-woven bundles of considerable diameter and it can therefore produce the thickness required for a sandwich. Internal damping Composite materials have properties suitable for applications where both rigidity and low mass are required. However, their disadvantage is that they lack damping, which leads to very poor control of vibrations. Recent developments in this field combining composites and natural fibers have brought unexpected opportunities. Flax fiber has an excellent internal damping of the same order of magnitude as the glass or Kevlar® fibers or aluminum. MADE IN FRANCE AND AFFORDABLE Flax cones are designed and manufactured in France, from french flax fiber. France is the main cultivator in Europe of fiber flax, principally in Flanders, Picardy, Normandy and the Pas-de-Calais region. French flax is considered the best in the world. Synthetic fibers or foams originating from petrochemical resources are subject to inflation linked to the sharp rise in crude oil prices. Organic or ecological textiles, like flax, are thus becoming more and more pricecompetitive. Because the “W” or "K2" sandwich have to be manufactured by hand, their range of application remains limited for reasons of cost. The industrial process developed to manufacture the "F" cones bring it within reach of very pricecompetitive product ranges

Driver material really doesn't matter for woofers as long as it is stiff. Driver material CAN matter for tweeters. I don't choose drivers based on the piston material, I choose them based on measured performance.

adaboy I actually don't have a preference but the Focal speakers I have used flax drivers and they sound good.

I don't care for most metal cones because they can "ring", but... Monitor Audio C-CAM- ceramic-coated aluminium/magnesium alloy, created a thinner, lighter more rigid cone & dome, one which is extremely efficient and less prone to distortion. With Rigid Surface Technology (dimples) are thinner, lighted and more responsive C-CAM cones, meaning greater speed and accuracy, as well as greatly reduced distortion. I also like Scan Speak Revelator.and they are paper. Paper is still king & used by some of the best speakers in the world. B&W ditched Kevlar. I agree with DYohn about tweeters and why I was hesitant about ribbons when they first came out, but now...wow. Soft domes are still great cost to performance. Bottom line- what sounds best- design & engineering is the key.

A Stradivarius is made from wood.
What could bring the sound home better than paper. Many frown on paper because it doesn’t ring pricey like titanium or platinum.

Bill Many years ago when I was in the car audio world there was a raging debate about subwoofer cone materials, with people berating paper and calling for aluminum or poly cones out of pure ignorance and an assumption that paper means weak. So I had my friend Dan Wiggins at Adire Audio send me a 15" cone out of his Tumult driver, which was paper, and I used to take it to audio shows and SPL comps place it on the ground large open end down and then stand on the apex. No problem.

Ultimately, it doesn't matter as long as they sound good and are rugged. However, weaved and metal drivers are the sexiest.
