After watching First Man in Faux-Imax I watched it on Blu Ray.
It's clear to me now that even though my screen isn't small, this is simply a movie to have caught on the big screen. The majesty and tension is reduced due to screen size. Watching it in theaters I had a real sense of wonder during the moon sequences which didn't full translate. Having said that, still a great movie! The sound effects are deafening and the cockpit feel must be pretty stunning in surround sound. I watched it using my HD600's and they were cranking it out. It's a demo disc for me.

Still thought Buzz was shortchanged and Neil's wife was way too mad at him after he came home!

garbulky - I agree. I first saw it at a very small theater at the historic Colonial Theater in Phoenixville, PA. I loved it, but wanted to see it again on a big screen.

Went to see it again in Imax, and I too was wowed.

I have the 4k disc on order, and I'll watch it again. I highly recommend the movie.

PS - the screenplay was based on an authorized Neil Armstrong biography.

I got my Netflix copy yesterday and started it after dinner.
It was a LONG day and by the time I got to Armstrong on his first Gemini mission, I was in La La Land.
After I finish sucking down my morning Joe, I’ll finish.
Interesting perspective from what I saw so far. My wife enjoyed it....We laughed because she was the bleary eyed one first, and I thought I’d be watching this flick by myself.

I am a huge fan of the space programs as a whole. I read Neil Armstrong's a Life of Flight and I enjoyed it. Learning the risks that these astronauts put themselves in to and the cutting edge stuff they were doing is amazing to me.

A few thoughts - the director clearly knows what to do with this movie. A clear artistic vision was had the whole time through. The special effects were stunning. I went and saw this in Cinemax with Auro sound. Having watched a lot of moon and launch footage I was stunned at how good the reproductions were. The Appolo 13 Saturn launch sequence definitely looks dated to these spectacular looking shots.

I would say a good portion of this movie is basically shaking cockpit scenes. And it really does work on a big screen. You get the sensation that you are there.

You feel the disorientation of being crammed in a tiny capsule with poor visibility and trying to do precise manouvers.

I am not a fan of Ryan Gosling but he did do a badass Neil Armstrong! You could see he was fully committed and dead serious about getting to the moon despite saying very little.

The score was beautiful and grand.
More important a lot of interesting segments happened on the way to the moon. And they included all those things I wished other movies would have done.

***SPOILERS**** From showing that they launched two atlas's at the same time for orbital docking. The X-15!!! The poor visibility. The out of control spins. The LLV testing and failure! (Oh I wish there was more of this!) The landing site not being feasible and the fuel running out. The computer glitches. ****END SPOILERS***

I was awaiting the release of this movie and it satisfied everything I wanted.

My gripes. Well it seemed like Neil Armstrong was pretty annoyed about going to the moon. Was he? I don't know. But this makes it seem like he didn't really like it.

***SPOILER: The end scene - couldn't his wife give him a break? He went to the moon and returned safe. Come on lady! *** END SPOILER

Also well he doesn't really say much and though that may be true to his character, I would have liked a bit more from him. More relationships with his fellow astronauts etc.

Also more importantly Buzz came across very poorly in this one as he only got a few lines and they were all him being a jerk. Come on guys! Buzz was right there with Neil! There's a reason he was on the first flight!

And finally: The moon sequences were glorious. But I really wish they dedicated more of the movie to it. I felt like overall it was a short part of the movie and left out a lot of what happened once they got to the moon. I guess this was a movie about getting to the moon and what it felt like once you got there but stopped short of everything that happened during it.
Also wish they had more after the earth return sequences. The publicity etc.

And that's it. I rate this movie a 4.9/5 with 0.1 stars deducted because I wanted EVEN MORE! But what was there was a 5/5.
I felt like I was there and that's what I was hoping for with this movie. It looks amazing on a large screen. If you are a space buff go see it.

So, I finished watching after passing out last night 42 minutes into it from an exhausting day.
I ate, slept and breathed the space program, growing up and even got in trouble at school 🏫 for having an ear jack for a portable radio stuck in to monitor NASA broadcasts in class.
Never thought about these historical events portrayed mostly from Armstrong’s head as depicted in the film but, another perspective was just fine.
I hated the musical score (sorry) too sappy and took away from the film in my view.
The fire was handled well, frightening and haunting without going over the top.
Overall an interesting rendering, though I doubt I will revisit again anytime soon.

I'm waiting for Second Man. Buzz has such an interesting life. I know NASA didn't want such a showboater to be first. But it would have been way more entertaining if he was.

The Right Stuff and Apollo 13 remain my favorites in this genre.
A well crafted film chronicling the failures and success of the shuttle program could be a hit, though no easy task.

This topic got me thinking about the total number of astronauts to have flown aboard The shuttle .....789.

My father was an engineer on all of the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo missions, from the unmanned flights and throughout all of the moon landings. As a kid I saw a lot of cool stuff on open house days with my dad at North American Rockwell where he worked. I saw assembly areas, testing areas and a lot of returned space capsules and other returned or unused rockets and spacecraft.

My much older brother (almost 20 years older than me) was an engineer on all of the Space Shuttle missions.
