I watch a lot of YouTube videos from Steve Guttenberg- the Audiopheliac. I enjoy his discussions on various music topics and I love how he often reviews very affordable but high quality gear.
He once recommended a few recordings of uncompressed audio made with percussion instruments. One of these was by Max Roach (M'Boom).
M'Boom is on Tidal and I really enjoyed this unique recording. I've listened to it on good headphones and on an older amp/preamp w/ Klipsch RF-62ii speakers.
Played loud, the sound is really fun to listen to and there are many different percussion type instruments coming at you. But it's never overwhelming or brash. It's actually quite musical- one track is a take on the Thelonious Monk/Kenny Clarke classic, Epistrophy.
Earlier today I played it again, but this time with a new amp and preamp combo (Emo XPA2 gen3 and PT100). I bought the amp from BoomZilla a few weeks ago and the preamp a few months ago.. so this time, M'Boom played through a different source, but same speakers
I was amazed at the difference the new amp and preamp made.
This time, the recording sounded so real and powerful it was scary. Probably the new amp..the last time I listened to this album I didn't get the same feeling like I did tonight. It was like night and day.
I had the sound cranked up to a moderate level, probably the same as last time, but the speakers seemed to come to life.
Bass drums (kick drums?) sounded so real it was like someone kicking the footpedal right next to me. Bells, cymbals, chimes, and whatever else these guys used sounded as life-like as I've ever heard. At one point in a track, lightly tapped bells appeared to be behind me somewhere- this didn't happen before. It was all quite stunning.
An incredible listening session for sure.
Stream this on Tidal and treat your senses.

I've listened to all of the recordings he mentions and they're all fun to explore.
M'Boom just happened to hit me tonight. So give it a spin, you might find it really interesting.. or maybe you won't.. I was quite surprised at how much I enjoy these recordings.
One of them is a Chesky recording and not available on Tidal, but is on Google Play. This one is really good.
