I'm not an AV guy. I watch an occasional movie, but have little experience with AV processors. The only two I've encountered lately were a McIntosh and the Emotiva BasX. I thought both sounded fine. The only comment I'd make about AV processors is one that a salesman made to me (and it seemed to make a lot of sense): "Spend your money on the amplifiers. They'll be with you for a lot longer than the processor. Processors are obsolete before you get them home."
Now it's likely that the AV cognoscenti on the Lounge will disagree with that, so I'll ultimately defer to their judgement.

Processors are like digital camera bodies. Obsolete before you know it. Lenses are forever. Hence Amplifiers and great speakers. If it has a computer in it, it will change very quickly.

I'm not much of an upgrader for AV primarily because I still like my 1080p panel and haven't had the urge to expand to objective based surround.
Two channel is a different story. I'm particularly interested in stereo DAC innovation.

I don’t understand how a very good AVR is obsolete so quickly! Yes, Atmos is out BUT does the Aavr no longer output sound through its channels? Does it not seperate the movie into separate distinct channels?
I own a Yamaha 3020 which is now several years old. It handles 7.2/ 9.2 with hight channels in my theater in master and all the current formats but Atmas. What am I missing? I’ll put my theater up against most any for sound and enjoyment.
Its not a boat anchor! Does what it was purchased to do, very well mind you. I’ve also owned the XMC-1, same thing but its been long sold off in anticipation of a newer Emotiva product. If I go Atmos. Two channel has a slight edge over the Yamaha but bells and whistles are abundant on the Yammy, but I don’t really utilize them at all.
I’ve been doing HT for 40 years, its gotten easier and better to do very well. I do use separate amps and I think that extends the lifespan of the AVR. When I want SS two channel I use this but for real stereo I go full tubes! 😁

Maybe get the MiniDSP & deal with what I have? And get a Stealth DC-2(?) for music? I'm trying to watch college FB, had to take a break- the Integra has snow in the picture & UMC has audio drops, DTV problem??? grrrr. HDMI was not and is not ready for prime time- it sux, don't want to argue, it sux. Had to wire DTV straight to old reliable Pioneer RPTV. (had to vent a little)
novisnick-I too am looking at tubes again. I agree with you on AVR to pwr amp- one unit doing everything? heat kills solid state.
