I’m in the market for an amp to power 4 atmos speakers. I was looking around for a cheap used amp and came across a sherbourn pa 7-150. I don’t know much about them but found out more when I did some reading. So the price of the 7-150 is close to a new a500 with warranty. I like the power the 7-150 has to offer but worried if it ever breaks down, vs warranty and less power from the a500. Can anyone help me out here?

I use the A-700 for my Atmos speakers (also powers some Zone 2 speakers from it as well) and it does a good job. Before that I had and XPA-5 running the Atmos speaker (it was a temporary setup) and I honestly hear no difference between the A-700 and the XPA-5 in that usage. The reality is the Atmos speakers don't really ever require a huge amount of power since they are merely effects speakers. IMO for just the Atmos speakers you will hear no difference between the A-500 and the pa 7-150. That being said the pa 7-150 is a fine amp and it gives you a few more channels in case you ever want to power something else off of it. It is physically a larger amp and if space is a concern the A-500 may fit places better than the pa 7-150. The warranty question is really up to you.

The pa 7-150 would have to be hidden as it won’t fit on my rack. So not a huge deal. I can fit the a-500 and just move my PS4 to a hidden spot. Again not a big deal. I know the atmos won’t use much power just thinking maybe down the road if I use it for something else If the a500 would still be enough to power surrounds and rears. Having the extra few channels is def. a bonus but again end of the day I just need my atmos speakers powered. I’ve read that the sherbourn amps seem to be pretty reliable so hard to say I guess

All else being equal the pa 7-150 is a much more robust amp and a big step up from the A-500. For just the Atmos application it won't make a difference, but the 7-150 could easily be the main amp for a good HT setup, where I feel as the A-500 would fall short in that regard to some extent.

So even though there is t warranty or even a company left for that matter I should not be too worried about having it break down. I guess a local company could always repair it? I’ve also had someone mention the outlaw 5000 but to my door that’s about $1100 cdn. The a500 is about $800 cdn and the pa 7-150 is used for $850

Sherbourn is a sister company of Emotiva (all owned by Jade design) and I am sure Emotiva can repair the Sherbourn amp. It's a tough call between the two amps since $850 would be a lot to spend and something go wrong with it within a year or so, but on solid state amps the failure rate is fairly low.

If I was local I’d jump on it. I also just got an email from outlaw. They’re releasing a new model 7000 7x130 for $949 intro pricing

My A-500 easily powers all five of my speakers, three Chane A5 towers and rears are Emotiva UAC 8.2, for Atmos speakers you will be fine.
